It is a plant of the genus Asteraceae, all of which has a slightly thicker leaf texture, smooth and hairless on both sides, a total bract cylindrical or wedge-shaped, 2 cm long and about 0.8 mm wide, and grows at altitudes of 1200–4300 m on river flats, lakes, meadows, fields, fixed sand dunes or gravel fields.
There are two kinds of bitter vegetables in northern Shaanxi, one is sweet bitter vegetables, which is the following picture. This wild vegetable, blanched in boiling water, can be eaten cold. The flower color of sweet bitters is yellow.

The other is this wild dish, which is called bitter bitter vegetable and donkey bitter vegetable in northern Shaanxi (presumably meaning mainly used to feed donkeys). But there are also many people who specially pluck this dish, pick it out, wash it, boil the water, put the wild vegetables everywhere in the water, fish it out as soon as the water is opened, and then use the cool water to pull it out overnight before it can be eaten coldly. The flowers of milkweed (known as bitter bitter vegetable in northern Shaanxi) are pink.
