Yunzang Zhai Art 2022 Spring Auction June 4, 2022 Raising a wave of pleasing raw goods

Taiwan's Yunzang Zhai Art 2022 Spring Auction will be held on June 4 at taipei Fubon International Convention Center, the auction will be divided into contemporary art, huan wei linlang and Chinese antiques three special sessions of nearly 400 pieces of fine works, covering contemporary art, Shang Zhou bronzes, Buddha statues, porcelain, jade, etc., raw goods, wonderful.

The two sections of Gaogu and Buddhist art are particularly exciting. Gaogu part of the leading artifacts are the late Shang bronze phoenix pattern cattle, through the public and private collections, known to exist in only five pieces, respectively, in the Hunan Provincial Museum, Shanghai Museum, Japan Meixiu Art Museum, Harvard University Art Museum and other important museums, Yun Zang Zhai This piece of shape and technology and Hunan Bo and Shangbo beef nest is no different, although the volume is slightly smaller, but the artistry and importance is not inferior to the Yin Ruins Tomb seen in the weight of the heavy vessel, and may be the only one that can be circulated in the market. In the high ancient porcelain plate, the two Tang Dynasty pottery horses in Mr. Zhang Weihua's old collection in the cloud are worthy of attention; the purple spot plates of the Jun kiln delivered by Lu Qinzhai and Dai Runzhai are even more good things that Song porcelain collectors flock to.

There is an extremely important Northern Wei clay statue of Maitreya in the Buddhist art section that cannot be missed, and the bodhisattva is similar to the famous Statue of Luoyang Yongning Temple, and some people may think that clay sculpture is difficult to compare with stone carving, but in fact, compared to stone carving, clay sculpture is more difficult to preserve, and there are fewer surviving, and it is precious.

The 觥 is a wine container, like a cow, a courtesan word, and a high and convex bull horn. The head and back of the ox are covered, and there is a small standing tiger as a button on the cover, the cover is decorated with the body of the animal face fish, the eyes are round and convex, and the scales are scaled. The belly of the vessel is lined with cloud and thunder patterns, full of phoenix patterns, hovering with a long crown, long crown hanging feathers, heroic posture, through the "three layers of flowers" decoration, set off a gorgeous visual feeling and three-dimensional sense, the neck is decorated with symmetrical mushroom horn dragon pattern, animal face pattern, the tail is also decorated with a small animal face in the shape of a human. Lot description (with appendix): the inscription is a wine container, like a cow, a courtesan word, and a high and convex bull horn.

On the one hand, this book advocates realism, and through the capture of details (such as cow heads and hooves), the shape of the cow is interpreted beautifully. On the other hand, through the multiple combination decoration of various animals (monsters), it is ensured that the viewer can see more from one, and from different angles, all present unique animal (monster) combinations that are not repeated, undulating, mysterious and gorgeous, and shocking. It can be said that it condenses the highest achievements of the bronze ceremonial art of the late Shang Dynasty, although it is small in size, it is not inferior to the pound-and-weight vessels seen in the Shang King and the Later Tomb of Wang Du Yin.

This kind of beef nest is rare in existence, and there are only five pieces so far, which are collected in the Hunan Provincial Museum, Shanghai Museum, and The Meixiu Art Museum in Japan, and the other two pieces are completely light and unadorned, which are stored in the Harvard University Art Museum in the United States and the private collection in Japan. Scholars have pointed out that such animals are mostly distributed in the southern region of the Shang Dynasty, which is different from the common decoration pattern of yin ruins, which means that there is an independent bronze casting center in the Yangtze River Basin of the Shang Dynasty, which has a super high level of craftsmanship, and often maintains close contact, sharing and even exchange with Yin ruins. The shape, decoration pattern and weight of this article are no different from those of the cattle in the Hunan Provincial Museum and the cattle in the Shanghai Museum, indicating that the three are the products of one time and one place. This book may be the only private collection that can be circulated.

As for why make ceremonial vessels in the shape of "cows"? We have reason to believe that this is related to the so-called "Tai Prison" in the Shang Zhou Lishu, that is, the sacrifice of cattle, sheep, and pigs, and according to the literature, only the Son of Heaven and the princes have the right to use it. It is worth noting that in the Hunan region of the late Shang Dynasty, three animal-shaped wine vessels that can correspond to Taigao have been unearthed: the cattle vessels unearthed in Hengyang, the Fengzun unearthed in Xiangtan, and the sheeps in the old collection of the Fujita Museum of Art, which should not be accidental coincidences, which can indicate that this inscription is related to the ancient "Taigao" ritual.

Annotations:

1 The oxbows in the Shanghai Museum were picked from the scrap copper of the Shanghai smelter in the 1950s, and only the body remains, and the lid of the instrument seen today is a replica.

The apparatus is elliptical, extravagant, corseted, drooping abdomen, and high circle feet. The whole body is full of decorations, from top to bottom, namely decomposition type small animal face pattern, dragon pattern, decomposition type large animal face pattern, standing ear dragon pattern, relief clear and intimidating, and meticulous. The sole of the circle foot is decorated with two symmetrical animal face reinforcements, which are different from the common cross and mesh reinforcements, and the artistic effect is outstanding. The decoration of this vessel is ornate and should belong to the high-ranking nobles, and the shape and ornamentation of the vessel are similar to the "history" of the National Palace Museum in Taipei and the Shanghai Museum, which can be cited as a reference. The "Ge" clan was a fairly active clan in the late Shang Dynasty, and its traces were found in Anyang, Shandong, and even Shaanxi.

This instrument has a very long process of delivery in Europe and the United States, it is reported that it was auctioned at Sotheby's auction in London in 1941, indicating that this instrument was scattered overseas before 1941, Luo Zhenyu's "Three Dynasties Jijin Wencun" contains a Piece of Xu Naichang (1869-1943) Old Collection of Ge Chen, the rubbings see the "Ge" writing is similar to this instrument, it is likely to be the same piece. It was purchased in Europe by Henry Guinness de Laszlo before 1945, according to available records. Henry was an Englishman of Hungarian origin, and his father Philip (1869-1937) was a well-known court painter in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his aristocratic surname came from the canonization of The Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. Henry's mother was from the Guinness family of Irish dignitaries and owned the Guinness Mahon Bank. Henry traveled extensively with his parents around Europe as a young man, and after earning his Ph.D. in chemistry, he also taught at prestigious universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge. Although he did not follow his father's path of painting, Henry was keen on art collections, especially for bronze and ceramics in early China, and durham University's museum collection was donated by Henry. After Henry's death, his widow Juliane was adapted to frederick of the von Hessert family, and Gordon also moved from Europe to the United States, and the current private collector in Taiwan was purchased from the descendants of the von Hessert family.

The artistic value of this book cannot be said to be inextricably divided, and the degree of magnificence can be said to be the most outstanding in this category, and it is probably the only treasure that can circulate in private hands except for the major museums. In 2019, the old collection of the Boat Boat, which is almost the same as this one in terms of shape and decoration, was auctioned at Christie's in New York in 2019, and finally created a good sale of 300,000 US dollars. In contrast, the two similar pieces of cloth were both exiled to Europe before and after World War II and were treasured by famous collectors, but it is worth mentioning that Ge Chen's valuation is relatively reasonable, less than half of the Two Pieces. In addition, this book has not appeared for more than 80 years, and it is a rare market raw product, and the collection value is self-evident. On the other hand, judging from the inscription, it is likely that the benchen is Xu Naichang (1869-1943) old Tibetan Ge Chen, Xu Shi is a famous gold and stone collector in the late Qing Dynasty, and the time of the dispersal of this instrument in Europe is also similar to that of Xu Naichang' death, on the one hand, we can push the time of Ge Chen's delivery to Xu Naichang, and secondly, due to the diffusion of Xu Naichang's collection behind Xu's body, this instrument is also a very rare and confirmable Xu Naichang bronze collection today, which is of great significance.

The buddha has a thick lip, a trumpet-shaped mouth, a slightly bulging abdomen, a slightly extravagant circle foot, a whole body phototropy, and only two string patterns on the upper and lower parts of the abdomen, just like the aforementioned "Bao Yi" zun, decorated with tapir heads, and the age is also similar to the former, covering the intersection of the early and middle periods of the Western Zhou Dynasty. The meaning of the Buddha-figure inscription is that so-and-so is the instrument of the father's ancestor "Ri Yan". "Ri 癸" is a Japanese name, which is recognized by scholars as still used during the Western Zhou Dynasty, and is a descendant of the merchants.

In addition, although the unknown maker is his person, the composite family emblem of the suffix "◆ ■" can indicate his family genus. According to the statistics of Hu Jialin of the Shanghai Museum, there are 17 bronze ware with the "◆■" clan emblem known to be published, most of which appeared in the early and middle periods of the Western Zhou Dynasty.

It is worth noting that the Shanghai Museum's collection of "■" Gui, also suffixed with "◆■ " clan emblem, and the "■" Gui is made by the 1975 Shaanxi Fufengzhuang White Cellar Group bronze ware. In addition, the objects of the two "■" Fangding sacrifices in the group of bronzes are "Wenzu Yigong, WenFei Ri peng", "Wen Zu Jia Gong, Wen Mu Ri Geng", and the female elders (mother, grandmother... All are referred to by japanese names, which coincide with the sacrificeees of the vessel, "Nichidate", and the above evidence can show that the devotees of the Buddha-figure belong to the same family, and the family is a branch of the "◆■" clan, but the clan emblem does not necessarily appear in every group of bronze inscriptions. Through the inscriptions of the bronze ware, we can know that the "◆■" family, as a descendant of merchants, served in the Western Zhou court and held a high position, although the dynasty changed, they still retained some of the traditional customs of the merchants, such as Japanese names and clan emblems, and the Buddha-figures were members of the rare "◆■" ethnic bronzes, and the inscription writing style reflected the freehand and atmosphere of the early Western Zhou Dynasty, and the historical value is self-evident.

The abdomen is ovate, the flow and tail are slender, the lines are neat, and the rigidity and softness are integrated, which appropriately reflects the peak of the craftsmanship of bronze casting in the late Shang Dynasty. The two sides of the ear are decorated with a large animal face, with a thunder pattern substrate, and the food is applied to it, in the posture of an elephant trunk and a dragon, and the decoration is gorgeous and extraordinary, which is extremely special. Taking the 'Ya Ugly' Fang Ding in the National Palace in Taipei as an example, the outer frame is sub-shaped, and the inner figure is in a kneeling posture, and the hand is placed on the left side between the wine statue and the instrument seat, and the elephant sits on his knees and drinks. As for the mountain-shaped decoration of the humanoid head, it should refer to the ben crown on the top.

As Professor Dong Shan of Peking University pointed out, there are several different ways to write 'Ya Ugly', the writing of this instrument The human form is more simplified, and the hand performance is not clear, but the left side of the wine container seat (forbidden) and the wine zun (built-in dagger) above the instrument seat are quite clear, similar to the 'Ya Ugly' Fang Yi of the National Palace Museum in Taipei and the 'Ya Ugly' in the Shandong Archaeological Research Institute. The 'Ya Ugly' artifact has been discovered in the Qing Dynasty, and in the following hundred years, it has been repeatedly discovered, and the most eye-catching is the Subutun Cemetery in Qingzhou, Shandong, where a large number of 'Ya ugly' bronze ware has been unearthed in the late Shang Dynasty, which is the tomb of the 'Ya Ugly' family, and the academic circles generally recognize the 'Ya Ugly' as the Shandong Wang clan in the late Shang Dynasty, and may be the most important ally of the Shang Kings in the Eastern Front. The "Zuo Zhuan" said that the six Yin remnants who were assigned to the State of Lu at the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, of which the 'Long Spoon Clan' and the 'Tail Spoon Clan' should be the ethnic groups of the 'Ya Ugly'.

In short, the decoration of BenJue is rich and fascinating, and as a member of the 'Asian Ugly' clan, it has both artistic and historical value, and is a valuable treasure for the early purchase of the famous British antique dealer Bluett & Sons in the private collection of Taiwan.

Fang Ding has thick lips and ears, a slightly open mouth, and gradually retracts downwards, with four animal faces decorating the pillar feet, and each of the four corners has a rib. Two convex string patterns will be divided into two spaces, its lower blank, its upper decoration of a dragon pattern, the dragon body is divided into two, if viewed in the cross-section, the dragon pattern decoration in the shoulder of the dragon occasionally visible, less appear on the ding, Hong Kong Guardian auctioned a pair of dragon pattern square ding last year, the decoration bureau is similar to this instrument, can be cited as a reference.

The inner wall of this Ding ware is cast with a composite clan emblem: 'Yaxian' is a sub-shape on the outside, and a pictographic combination of arrows, eyes and human figures on the inside, and the 'Yaxian' instrument that can be examined at present, there are more than 20 cases, all of which belong to the late Shang Dynasty, of which the "Lone bamboo" state of the Hebei generation, and the Anyang Guojiazhuang (m160) are the most distributed, the lone bamboo country is the ancient country that existed in the Shang Dynasty, 'Yaxian' and 'Yaxian' are important clans in the country, and Anyang Guojiazhuang is a high-level aristocratic cemetery with close relations with the Shang King, which shows that 'Yaxian' is an important clan in the country. The clan was quite active in the political arena of the late Shang Dynasty. As for the "Ya" form, most scholars agree that it means a certain official title of the Shang Dynasty, although it is not a branch of the Shang King, but it often appears on the gui and the feudal officials, indicating that those who crown the "Ya" form are noble and extraordinary, and they are high-ranking nobles who have a fairly close relationship with the Shang King and have a temporary power. This artifact is the only Fang Ding with the 'Yaxian' clan emblem found so far, and the collection value is self-evident.

During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, China's Buddhist beliefs flourished, from the emperor to the people, and to worship the Buddha, which became a common practice. At this time, Buddhist art also flourished, bursting out of a magnificent and splendid aesthetic style. The well-known grotto art of Yungang, Dunhuang, Longmen and so on has a profound influence on future generations and is also a dazzling treasure in human civilization. The clay statue of Maitreya Buddha wears a four-leaf crown on his head, with flower pillars on both sides of the front of the crown, his eyebrows are sparse, his eyes are looking down, his lips are slightly sniffed, and his earlobes are full. The upper body is exposed, draped with a peach-shaped collar, and there is a plump jewel at the tip of the peach. The body is plump and feminine, the sitting posture is slightly forward, the hands are raised in front of the body to tie the "Saying Seal", the lower body is dressed, the waist is tied with brocade, the skirt is naturally flowing with joy, and the feet are crossed. The surface of the clay sculpture is left with a little bit of colorful red color, and the statue is beautiful and vicissitudes, and the french rhyme is special. After the Fall of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the concept of Maitreya as the "future Buddha" was passed down to Middle-earth. With the translation of the main classics about the Pure Land of Maitreya, the belief in the Pure Land of Maitreya during the Southern and Northern Dynasties was very popular, and maitreya statues became the fashion of statues in this period.

The cross-legged sitting posture comes from the Western "Hu sitting", which was once popular in Central Asia and the Western Regions, and is a sitting posture that represents noble status. Based on this symbolism, Buddhist statues of sitting on their feet have arisen in areas such as Gandhara, and this style of statues has also moved east with the Dharma. Clay statues have the characteristics of being easier to shape than stone statues, which are more delicate and delicate than stone statues of the same period, more expressive, and the image characteristics of the characters are more intuitively reflected and more beautiful. However, clay sculptures are not easy to preserve and are difficult to pass on to future generations.

Today, there are only a few clay sculptures in northern Wei, famous of which are the painted sculptures of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Gansu (see 1) and the clay sculptures of the Taji site of Yongning Temple in Luoyang, Henan (see 2). According to historical records, Yongning Temple was built in the middle and late Northern Wei Dynasty, and was the most magnificent royal temple in the capital Luoyang, and was later destroyed by lightning fire. The site unearthed a number of clay sculpture fragments, which are exquisitely shaped and stunning. The Buddha-figure Maitreya Buddha, judged by its crown, Dharma phase and collar, can be concluded to be a statue of the middle and late Northern Wei Dynasty. However, a closer look at its style can be compared with the art of statue-making in the grottoes of Gongxian County, Henan (see 3, see 4). Among the Buddha statues in the Gongxian Grottoes, there is a three-leaf crown characterized by two flower pillars (see 5, see 6), and the Buddha statue is a single statue, wearing a four-leaf crown, and there are flower pillars on both sides of the front of the crown, which is more rare and rare. The Gongxian Grottoes are located near Luoyang, the capital of the late Northern Wei Dynasty, but are lost in history. According to archaeological data alone, during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty, Xixuan Temple, which was later known as the Cave Temple, was built in the Gongxian Grottoes, and it is likely that there are similar clay statues in the temple. Every time I read the "Luoyang Jialan Chronicle", the author wrote word by word and tear: "The city collapsed, the palace overturned, the temple was ashes, and the temple tower was ruined." All sighed that the collapse of civilization was so easy and sudden, and it was a blessing to see the style of Yuan Wei sculpture again today, and I also prayed that contemporary civilization could be peaceful and peaceful.

The image is cast in brass. The Infinite Life Buddha held the nectar Buddha with both hands on his chest, and stood barefoot on the lotus platform, his toes slightly cocked. The head wears a crown of three leaves, the crown leaves are flower-like, gourd-shaped hair buns. The face is delicately carved and delicate, and the law is full of joy. Dressed in a silk skirt, a jewel ring and other outfits are inlaid with turquoise and coral. The shawl is very decorative, the ribbon is intertwined behind the head into a head light, the coat comes down from the shoulders, first around the big arm, then around the small arm, hanging down on both sides of the body, naturally rolling up, there is a feeling of wind fluttering. The overall shape is generous and beautiful, and the craftsmanship is superb. The upper edge of the lotus seat is decorated with three beads, the front side is cast with "Great Qing Qianlong Nian Respect" Kaishu Yangzhi, and the back is engraved "Tashlima Infinite Life Buddha". "TashriHama" is the abbreviation of the alloy Buddha statue made at Tashilhunpo Monastery in Tibet, which is famous for its exquisite craftsmanship.

The Qing Dynasty and Tibet were extremely closely related, and the Grand Ceremony of the Panchen Dalai Lama's visit to Beijing was not uncommon. When the Dalai Lama Panchen paid tribute to the Beijing Dynasty, most of them would bring exquisite Buddha statues from Tibetan areas to the imperial family. The statue of Tashilhunpo Monastery is a statue of the Buddha in Tibet, so it is enshrined as a top product for the royal family, and the "honorific" section of the lot also shows this. This statue is similar to the statue of the Infinite Life Buddha (see 2) enshrined on the table in the sixth room of the Fanhua Building of the Forbidden City in Beijing, and the degree of exquisiteness is even better, which is really valuable. Standing in the vein of Buddhist statues is relatively rare, and most of them are the fine works of the times, and this lot is an extraordinary masterpiece of Buddhist statues in the Qing Dynasty, regardless of copper, gold water and craftsmanship.

Glaze red began in the Yuan Dynasty, its process is complicated, the temperature is not easy to pinch, so it is extremely rare. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, the color rendering technology of copper red glaze was initially mastered, and the ornamentation could be expressed with fine brushstrokes, and the lines were clear. The red firing technique of the glaze in the Qianlong Dynasty became more skilled, and was personally supervised by the inspector Tang Ying. In the fourth year of Qianlong (1739), Tang Ying was in Beijing to observe the sample and personally received the order to burn the glazed red porcelain, "Qing File - Tang Ying Played Folding No. 62" recorded: "On October 25, when the slaves were in Beijing, the eunuch Hu Shijie handed over a glazed red horse hanging bottle, a painting sample, passed on the purpose to see the glaze color of the porcelain bottle, and fired several pieces according to the paper pattern, and sent them with a pattern halal. And the ancient porcelain style of good selection of several, but also fired glaze in the red color, all written Qianlong model sent to present. ...... And advise the glaze in the red to be halal, the glaze is moist and the color is distinct. When the slave was created, he chose to send it to Kyo Gong to present to the Imperial Palace."

It can be seen that the Qianlong Emperor took great pains to burn the glaze red. This product is full of shape, small and pleasant, watery mouth, round shoulders and straight abdomen, the whole body is decorated with four sets of precious flowers painted in glaze red, the hair color is beautiful and matchless, and the ornamentation is rich but there is no sense of complexity. The mouth edge is decorated with beads and ruyi cloud patterns for one week, and the lotus petal pattern is surrounded by near the bottom, and the blue and white book "Qianlong Year of the Great Qing Dynasty" seal book at the bottom.

There are few small pieces of mobile literature on the market, see 1 for the Kangxi Dynasty glaze red apple zun, the copper red glaze of the product is very similar to this piece. See 2 The Qianlong Dynasty's Double-Fold Portrait and the Treasure Flower of this product are painted in exactly the same way as the composition. Very few well-made glazed red vessels survive, and this product is one of the most precious examples.

As a unique ancient wine vessel, the main ones are jade, lacquer, etc., of which the jade carving is the most precious. At the Hongmen Feast, "Pei Gong enshrines wine for longevity", and the utensils used are 卮. This kind of jade is exquisitely selected and exquisitely crafted, which is a representative product of the era in the Warring and Han Dynasties, and a more precious jade cultural and historical relic, which represents the exquisite skills of the ancients in the pre-Qin period to rule jade, and carries the life demands of the ancients.

This vessel is carved from a whole piece of jade, and the body is made of white jade as the ground, with yellow-brown qin marks on the part, and the jade is moist. It is cylindrical, straight-mouthed, flat-bottomed, and carved with four half-squatting figurines as feet, making figurines in the shape of a figurine. On the figurines are four reliefs of the tiger protruding from the body, the tiger as a side head lying down, angry eyes, open mouth and teeth, outstretched, as if roaring, slender arched back, curly tail erect. The flat ornamentation is staggered, and the bas-relief dragon and the tiger alternately stacked, which is breathtaking. The process combines a variety of techniques such as through carving, high relief carving, skeleton carving, flat carving, yin line carving, etc., reflecting the highest level of jade production technology in the Western Han Dynasty. One of the objects most similar to this collection is the Early Western Han Dynasty Bird and Beast Pattern Jade Jade Tablet (see 1) in the National Palace Museum, which has the inscription Yangxindian (see 2) on the base, indicating that the vessel must be a pre-Qianlong Emperor's pre-case ornament. It shows that the jade is precious and rare, and it is impossible to have it without the emperor's nobles.
