This scientific research and art building is located on a plot of land overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Dr. Jonas Salk, one of the founders, is an American experimental medicine scientist and virologist known for discovering and manufacturing the first safe and effective "polio vaccine". He believed that science and art could be combined, so he called for the institute to be built into a "place where Picasso could come" and that the entire building should follow the design direction of "let art serve science".

So in 1959, he invited the famous American architect Louis Kahn to design it. Louis Kahn was a philosopher-like Jewish architect whose mother, Bertha, came from a prominent Mendelssohn family, and his grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn, was a famous Jewish philosopher in the 18th-century German Enlightenment, and Louis Kahn's work was often supported by his own theories under the influence of the family's cultural heritage.
"His theory not only has the foundations of German classical literature and Romantic philosophy, but also incorporates the architectural concept of modernism, the philosophical ideas of Oriental culture, and even the chinese Laozhuang doctrine."

The buildings that stand on both sides of the central square are relatively standing, which is composed of the central axis of the east, and the solid wall of the twist angle of the building forms the two sides of the square space: on the one hand, the daily life of scientists; on the other hand, it is a solid shield, facing the sky and the sea. The concrete material is made of several kinds of California concrete and volcanic ash, presenting a naturally weathered beauty, like a quiet and silent concrete monastery.
There is a straight spring in the atrium, dividing the complex into two symmetrical parts, starting at the source of the rectangle and pointing to the Pacific Ocean at the end. Louis Kahn uses implicit metaphors of origin and destination to bring people subconscious associations about the beginning of life.
Regarding the design of the atrium, Louis Kahnd's explanation appears in the warm-up video of the early spring show:
"If you build it into a square, you're going to get a façade — a façade facing the sky."
