The Lao Rocket Festival, also known as the High Ascension Festival or Artillery Festival, is one of the many traditional festivals in Laos. The Vulcan worship, derived from Brahmanism, is held annually on June 15 of the Buddhist calendar.
Whenever the rainy season comes, people launch homemade rockets into the air and pray to the rain god that the wind and rain will be smooth. People compete with whose rockets fly the highest, farthest, and most beautiful, and the winner is selected to reward them, and those who fail to launch will be punished by being immersed in the mud.
