According to The Famous Woj, Jokic was elected regular season MVP this season. It's also the second consecutive season that Jokic has been crowned regular season MVP, but this year's awards are probably the most controversial since the 2016-17 Westbrook win.
Among the three MVP candidates, Jokic, Alphabet Brother and Embiid all have many fans. Jokic's personal data is great, averaging 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game. Jokic's biggest controversy over his election was that the Nuggets were only the sixth seed in the West, their team's record was so poor, and they also lost the Warriors 4-1 in the first round of the playoffs.
In NBA history, only four MVPs failed to advance to the second round of the playoffs that year: Unseld, Moses Malone, Nowitzki and Westbrook. With Jokic winning the MVP, he also joined the ranks.
Wes Unseld (1969)
In addition to Chamberlain, Unseld is the only player to have won both Rookie of the Year and regular season MVP. Unseld did just that in 1968-69, averaging 13.8 points and 18.2 rebounds per game for the Baltimore Bullets. The Bullets won 57 races and finished first in the Eastern Division. But in the first round of the playoffs, they were swept out by the New York Knicks.
Moses Malone (1979, 1982)
Malone was named regular season MVP three times in his career. On two occasions, he was eliminated in the first round.
In the 1978-79 season, Malone averaged 24.8 points, 17.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in the regular season, and was named the league's MVP, but the Rockets were sent home early by the Atlanta Hawks.
Malone again won the MVP in 1981–82 with 31.1 points and 14.7 rebounds. But the Rockets were eliminated again in the first round, losing 2-1 to the Seattle Supersonics.
Dirk Nowitzki (2007)
After Malone's first round exit in 1982, another 25 years later, another MVP in the NBA stopped the first round of the playoffs. He was Nowitzki in 2007. Witzki averaged 24.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 78 games in the regular season, but suffered the "Black Eight Miracle" against the Warriors in the first round!
Westbrook (2017)
In 2017, Westbrook won the regular season MVP with an average of three-doubles per game. It was truly a historic season, with Westbrook scoring 42 triple-doubles, breaking Robertson's record. Averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game, Westbrook brought the Thunder to the sixth seed in the West. They eventually lost 4-1 to the Rockets in the first round of the series.
