Design: Sans-Arc Studio
Location: Australia
Smallfry Seafood Restaurant is an Australian-based shop selling Japanese specialties fish and chips.
Its design is inspired by the traditional Japanese "fish shop", and the designer Sans-Arc Studio borrowed from the "nostalgic fish shop atmosphere" to recreate the restaurant.
Interestingly, the designer's materials have been transformed into a modern, textured, immersive space with a Japanese-inspired waterfront experience.
Sans-Arc Studio divides this cramped site of just 50 square meters into two parts.
On one side is a textured, attractive dining area with a soft and serene marine atmosphere, while on the other side is a clean and tidy service area with a takeaway window facing the street.
The seemingly haphazard and carefully arranged spatial environment actually combines Sans-Arc Studio's completely rational, unique, and thoughtful material choices with phenomenological experience.
While embracing history, the restaurant space also conveys the owner's Japanese cultural background and unique handling of traditional food.
Whether it's a light meal on the beach or a swim under sparkling water, the colors and textures of the materials are based on these moments about the ocean, giving more meaning to the space.
The mottled texture of granite and terrazzo gives the restaurant the natural beauty of the stone texture.
Embellished with curved ball chandeliers, the spatial atmosphere of Smallfry Seafood Restaurant is relaxed and easy-going, yet discreet and unique.
The design of the service area is relatively simple and clear. White tiles and metal decorations create a more minimalist aesthetic of the space.
In an environment of concrete and steel storefronts on Waymouth Stree, the wooden façade of Smallfry Seafood Restaurant contrasts with the icy streetscape that surrounds it, bringing a warm breath.
It draws people into this warm, hospitable space.
