Last season, 17 clubs lost money in Ligue 1, with only three clubs in Saint-Etienne, Reims and Dijon having a positive operating profit, with a total loss of 645 million euros in the league, with Paris the Greater losing the most 224 million euros, while the total loss of the league in the 2019-20 season was only 269 million euros.
The widening of losses is highly correlated with the plunge in matchday ticket revenue. Starting in October 2020, Ligue 1 allows up to 5,000 fans per game, and even though the 2019-20 season ended early after the 28th round due to the epidemic, the total ticket revenue of Ligue 1 that season was close to 170 million euros, while last season this figure dropped to 79.05 million euros, a drop of 95%, and Angers's ticket revenue was directly reported to zero last season.
Although the main broadcaster Mediapro announced its withdrawal from the partnership in December 2020, Ligue 1's broadcast revenue for the 2020-21 season still grew by 21%, from 690 million euros in the 2019-20 season to 835.654 million euros last season. But it wasn't Ligue 1 champions Lille who earned the most last season, they didn't even come in the top three, with the top three clubs in terms of broadcast revenue being Paris Greater, Marseille and Rennes.
