"In the experimental building B for 50 days, feeding and picking, scientific researchers help scientific researchers!" | East China Division's War of The Epidemic (14)

author:Shangguan News

For 50 days, Wu Hongxia, Professor Zhang Meiling of the Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Nutrition and Environmental Health of the College of Life Sciences, has been a third student in the research group, and for 50 days, she and her partner Zhou Nannan have helped students transfer emergency scientific research supplies and raise and breed experimental animals and plants in the experimental building B. Listen to her today about this special experience of fighting the epidemic.

Many people will ask, why didn't you go back to the graduate apartment when you notified closed-loop management on the 13th? In fact, I originally chose to live in The Experimental Building B because I wanted to record a video of my application.

My graduation experiment was completed, I was preparing for a job, and I chose to stay in order to make a job application video that would show the experimental environment.

I was expecting the school to be able to lift the closed loop in two days, but at 7 o'clock on March 16, after waking up in the morning and seeing the "stay still" instruction, I realized that life in experimental building B might take a little longer.

But I really didn't expect that this stay would be fifty days.

There are very few people closed in the experimental building B, originally I thought that I could quietly prepare for graduation and job hunting, but I immediately found that there were not many "troubles", and I did not expect that this "waiting" task was heavy and responsible.

Statistical table of graduates transferring materials

First of all, it is the transfer of wave after wave of scientific research supplies, and the most urgent thing is that the graduate students need to transfer computers to complete the graduation thesis writing.

In those days, my only partner, Zhou Nannan, often commuted to the first and fifth floors, needing to communicate with the uncle of the security guard to borrow the key, pack the goods, write the label, and finally return the key.

Because the students and we contacted each other at different times, so this kind of work was repeated throughout the day, and the same laboratory had to come and go many times to put together the transported things, to be honest, those two days were really a bit "crazy". In the end, we had about forty or fifty pieces of material in transit.

When the transfer of supplies was almost complete, the task of caring for experimental animals and plants followed.

There are many research groups in our experimental building B, which basically raise and cultivate experimental animals and plants. Since the time of the closed management was announced in the morning, and everyone had not yet arrived at the laboratory, the task of taking care of these little lives fell on our shoulders.

My own experimental subjects are fish, and the living habits and feeding rules of other species of animals and plants are not clear, so it is necessary to maintain video communication with the "masters" of small animals and plants to understand their "dietary rules".

During this period, the "experimental subjects" we took care of ranged from plants to animals, from protozoa to mammals, and it can be said that if it were not for this experience, I would not have known that there were still such species in the experimental building B!

The attractive tomato fruit in the culture, the protozoa that "grasshoppers look" under the microscope, the babies that have just been born by small mammals, and the crickets that have been diligent and diligent...

I still have a sense of accomplishment when I see them being saved by us.

To communicate the details of feeding protozoa

We set up the "Bugs" group

A cricket that chirps diligently

We also learned a lot about raising and sampling tips for different species. Slowly, we have also formed feeding patterns and become organized:

8:30 Observe zebrafish on the 4th and 5th floors, change the water and feed;

9:30 Return to Building B after daily nucleic acid and borrow an access control card with the security master (because the number of times in and out of the monitoring room is too much, as long as you step into the door master, you will know the intention);

10:00 Water the tobacco plants on the second floor (2-3 days apart);

10:15 Feeding of small mammals on the 3rd floor (5-6 days apart);

13:00 4th floor tomato watering (3-4 days interval), crickets with water feeding (5-7 days interval);

14:00 Feeding of small mammals on the 5th floor (5-6 days intervals), observation of protozoa and change of wheat grains (7 days intervals), feeding of zooplankton (7 days intervals)

18:00 Observe the zebrafish on the 4th and 5th floors and feed.

(Time is not limited to this, subject to change)

While caring for the laboratory animals, we also encountered some small episodes:

➤ The zebrafish in the laboratory were in a very unstable state during the sealing period, and we speculated that it was a problem with the water quality. So the two of us fished out of the circulatory system changed to still water rearing, and the situation gradually eased.

➤ After a period of time in the teaching and research area, there are abnormalities in the area. Because we were afraid that the building would be closed the next day and could not transfer the ripe tomatoes to the biogenetic building for preservation, we picked tomato fruits overnight and preserved them, which could continue to be used as experiments.

➤ It is a special pity that in the process of helping cells pass through, I may not be able to survive the cells smoothly due to my lack of experience, and I am still strangely uncomfortable, and I am relieved to learn that there are still frozen cells.

When I take care of these little beings, I can't help but think that when we humans are turned upside down by the new crown epidemic, these animals and plants are still living in an orderly and orderly manner.

My mentality is also often fluctuating, the period from early April to mid-April is the peak of my interview, I need to spend a lot of time preparing for the trial lecture, so when I still need to take time out from time to time to help, I am really a bit tangled. Egoistic selfishness and a sense of morality to help others are constantly pulling me, but I know that scientific research is not easy, and experimental materials are very precious.

"Scientific researchers help scientific researchers", which has kept me going.

And the work at hand has not stopped. All the graduation process needs to be completed, after the graduation thesis is written, it is necessary to communicate with the tutor to modify and improve, and the defense PPT also needs to be completed synchronously, and it is a matter of patience to continuously make them streamlined and logical.

During the period of looking for a job, I often need to prepare the PPT for the audition the next day after receiving the interview invitation, so I will prepare the interview materials even late at night, just hoping that the audition will have a good performance.

During this period, the review opinions of the last paper submitted before graduation returned. I also attach great importance to this submission, which requires me to invest time in polishing the paper. I look forward to a good result and a satisfactory conclusion to my master's research career.

The days closed in Building B are really busy and fulfilling, and it is truly a time of a lifetime.

Water the tomatoes

"Thank you so much for !!!"

"Thanks, watching them take good care of by you!"

"Thanks to the sister, thanks! Hard work! ”

"Thanks, Experiment B Building Light!"

……

We have received a lot of thanks from everyone, and our hearts are still warm, just like Zhou Nannan said: "The 'selfishness' that was originally left in the laboratory has achieved a good thing." ”

Zooplankton are fed algae

Later, the situation in the teaching and research area improved, and in order to alleviate the pressure of food delivery, our block also organized a volunteer team of party members to deliver meals for other blocks. The friends in the School of Life Sciences are very powerful, and we have completed two food delivery tasks with tacit cooperation.

What was particularly touching was that I learned in my conversation with the canteen staff that they actually got up at two o'clock in the morning every day to make breakfast, and after delivering a meal, they had to make the next meal without stopping, but it was still difficult to meet the taste needs of all the students.

We are often prone to immerse ourselves in our own small world, treating our little grievances as suffering.

So, in times like this, when we walk out of our comfort zone, we can see how many people are making unimaginable efforts and sweats behind those food and clothing that everyone does not want to cherish. So, looking back now, my efforts in The Experimental Building B all this time are really insignificant at the school level.

Teachers who give up their small homes, teachers who bravely rush to the front line, logistics staff who eat three meals a day for us... Which one is not a respectable East China Normal University?

I hope that the epidemic will pass earlier, Shanghai is still the best Shanghai, Normal University is still the most beautiful Normal University, and we are the most lovely of us.
