Vietnam, sitting on a land area of 330,000 square kilometers, has a coastline of 3,260 kilometers and is narrow from north to south. After the official armistice in 1990, Vietnam began to resume normal economic development, and with the "Chinese experience" as the model, Vietnam's economy developed rapidly after "innovation and opening up", with Vietnam's GDP in 2021 of 362.619 billion US dollars, ranking sixth in ASEAN. In terms of military affairs, Vietnam has also become the mainland's biggest enemy in the South China Sea, and today we will take stock of the three major maritime weapons of the Vietnamese Navy.

Cheetah Type 3.9 frigate

Due to the weak position in the confrontation, the Vietnamese Navy also highlights the characteristics of air-submarine fast in the development of equipment, buying Maozi's Su/27/30 fighter jets in the air, submarines buying Maozi's Kilo-class conventional submarines, and fast highlighting the fierce missile boats and surface ship main force, cheetah 3.9 frigates, that is, Russian-made 1166.1E frigates. Because the Vietnamese Navy purchased an improvement based on the Design Of the Cheetah III (Gepard 3), it was called the Cheetah 3.9 Frigate (Gepard-3.9).

HMS Lee Taệc Navy frigate (hull number HQ-012)

The Vietnamese Navy purchased a total of four Cheetah 3.9-class frigates, which entered service in 2011 and 2018. They were named "Ding Xian Huang" (hull number HQ-011), "Li Taizu" (hull number HQ-012), "Chen Xing Dao" (hull number HQ-015) and "Ruan Hui" (hull number HQ-016).

In terms of armament, the Cheetah 3.9-class frigate is equipped with an AK-176 76 mm 59 caliber naval gun at the bow, and the air defense is the Russian-made "Palma" short-range weapon system (including the 9M337 "Pine-R" anti-aircraft missile, two six-tube 30 mm 30-KDAO (GSH-6-30KD) high-orbit automatic naval guns). On the anti-ship side, there are two four-seat KH-35E anti-ship missile launchers with a maximum range of 130 km. There are also two twin 533 mm torpedo launchers and a Ka-28 anti-submarine helicopter for anti-submarine combat missions.

Lightning-class missile boats

Another key point of air submarine speed is the missile boat, the Vietnamese Navy has 6 Styx anti-ship missiles equipped with The Styx Spider-I missile boats (Type 1241 missile boats) and 12 Poison Spider-V missile boats equipped with Uranus anti-ship missiles, that is, Lightning-class missile boats (Type 1241.8 missile boats). These missile boats were the main force in the coastal defense of the Vietnamese Navy.

At a glance, it was all anti-ship missiles

The most commendable thing about the Lightning-class missile boats is their powerful sea assault firepower, 500-ton small boats, actually equipped with 4 SS-N-25 "Uranus-E" anti-ship missiles, so that all 12 missile boats can project up to 200 anti-ship missiles to achieve the enemy's combat objectives in the open sea. The main gun is still an AK-176M 76 mm naval gun and two six-barrel 30 mm AK-630M rapid-fire guns, while enhancing air defense capabilities, with a "needle" -1M ship-to-air missile system with a range of 4.5 km.

Kilo-class conventional submarines

As the most critical part of the air-to-dive fast, the Vietnamese Navy spent $1.8 billion from Russia in 2009 to purchase six Kilo-class Type 636.1 conventional submarines, which are deeply improved models of the Kilo-class Type 636M submarines, using MGK400EM sonar system, photoelectric attack periscopes and environmental control systems more suitable for tropical environments, while introducing offensive weapons such as GE2-01 anti-submarine/anti-ship torpedoes and 3M-54E club submarine-launched anti-ship missiles. In particular, submarine-launched Club anti-ship missiles, with a maximum range of more than 220 kilometers, can be used by a single Kilo-class submarine to threaten surface ships in a sea area of nearly 160,000 square kilometers, and considering the concealment of submarines, the combat effectiveness is much greater than that of Su-30 fighters/Cheetah frigates/Lightning-class missile boats.
