On 3 May 2022, the ITTF announced its latest world rankings for May (Week 18). Compared to the previous week, this week's world rankings have changed dramatically, with the vast majority of people dropping their points significantly. Because the ITTF Executive Committee approved the latest proposal developed by the World Ranking Working Group. In order to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the event, the "initial points" introduced in 2020 will be deleted. Basically, a player's world ranking will be made up of the sum of the eight highest points earned in the last 12 months.

Fan Zhendong dropped from the previous 10598 points to 6900 points, and 3698 points less is still the first in the men's singles world. Liang Jingkun rose one place in the rankings and entered the top three for the first time in his career. Xu Xin, who was originally ranked eighth in the world, fell 73 places in the ranking and is now ranked 81st in the world. In women's singles, Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu and Wang Yidi won the top four, Japan's Hayata Hina rose to 5th, and Japan's Ito Mimachi fell two places to sixth.
