Recently, Wang Sen, deputy dean of the College of Forestry of Central South University of Forestry and Technology, was awarded the second batch of "Most Beautiful Forest and Grass Science and Technology Promoters" in China.
This honor awarded by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration gave more understanding of the scientific research experience of this "forester" and his deep love for the cause of forestry.
Let the delicious "crisp dates" become the "signature" of small counties
"Old Li, are there any new planting plans this year?" On April 30, Wang Sen called his farmer friends in Qidong again, and the content of the call was still "the same as the old three"—nagging, asking for plans, and solving problems.
The fate of Wang Sen and Qi Dong has to start from 2015. At that time, he and his mentor Xie Bixia began to study the result mechanism and promotion technology of the wooden jujube hanging of the southern fresh jujube, trying to break the thesis that the southern is not suitable for the development of the jujube industry. They chose Qidong County, where all aspects of the conditions are relatively up to standard, and promoted the experience of jujube tree planting here, and even developed the "Qidong Crispy Jujube". This small crispy date, because of its thin skin and crispy flesh, has a lot of small core meat, and the taste is particularly crisp and sweet. Soon it captured the hearts of many people.
In 2013, "Qidong crispy jujube" has been protected by the national geographical indication, at present, its promotion demonstration area has reached 2/3 of the cultivation area of jujube trees in Hunan, which has greatly promoted the improvement of the living standards of the local people.
Since then, his patented product "A Kind of Jujube Fruit Setting Agent in Subtropical Regions" has won the China Patent Excellence Award, which effectively solves the problem of low fruit set rate in the southern jujube industry; drafts and formulates the national forestry industry standard "Southern Fresh Jujube Cultivation Technical Regulations", so that the jujube industry in the south of the Yangtze River Basin has a standard to follow. After more than ten years of deep ploughing in the front line, Wang Sen has made a small jujube have great social value and economic benefits.
Innovate the theory of economic forest introduction, so that the "little walnut" blossoms and bears fruit
How to solve the problem of early fruiting walnut flowering and fruiting in low altitude areas? In order to solve this problem, in 2016, Wang Sen and his team decided to go to Sichuan to "find answers" to see how to revitalize walnut forests in rocky desertification areas through innovative economic forest introduction theory.
Under the guidance of innovative theory, he clearly took Sichuan as the main introduction direction, and joined hands with the team with Professor Wan Xueqin of Sichuan Agricultural University and others to use the winter and summer vacation time to jointly formulate operational standards, write management and nursing technology, and publish monthly reports to promote... After 2 years of countless hardships, they finally found that the basin can reduce the latitude of the introduction process, so as to overcome the technical problems such as the impact of high temperature in the local winter.
Not only that, the project also made a successful demonstration for more than 2 million mu of walnut forests that are difficult to flower and bear fruit in the low-altitude karst rocky desertification area of Hechi, Guangxi, and the fruit hanging rate in the second year after the transformation of more than 150 mu of demonstration forests was as high as 90.2%. Some insiders pointed out that the project has created a precedent for the flowering and fruiting of early walnuts in low-altitude areas of Guangxi, and has greatly promoted the wide promotion and application of walnut planting in the local area.
Deep ploughing of tropical arid economic forests, so that the "desert" bursts of green vitality
"When I went to the endless desert and stretched to the sea, I felt that the promotion of forest and grass technology was promising." Wang Sen recalled that in 2018, he was invited to the Gwadar port of Pakistan for ecological industry consultation, and the desert in front of him deeply stimulated his "forestry feelings".
Soon after, under his strong impetus, the team jointly established the "Belt and Road" Tropical Arid Economic Forest Engineering Research Center with China Overseas Port Holdings Limited, Yulin Holdings Limited, Chinese Forestry Society, Karachi University of Pakistan, Faisalabad Agricultural University and Indus University.
Since 2021, Wang Sen has led doctoral students to go deep into the Gwadar region of Pakistan several times, and according to its unique climate type, standing conditions and vegetation type, after repeated comparative analysis, the screening and breeding of excellent germplasm resources in Gwadar have been completed; the preliminary identification of three tree species such as sacred crown jujube, fig and large flower field jing as the main tree species of the green and high-quality economic forest industry in the Gwadar region will lay a solid foundation for the successful experience of accurate poverty alleviation in the mainland economic forest science and technology innovation service in the region.
In January this year, the "Belt and Road" Tropical Arid Economic Forest Engineering Technology Research Center was identified as the "Belt and Road" Tropical Arid Economic Forest International Joint Research Center in Hunan Province. Their efforts have also made the former "barren land" gradually full of greenery.
"As a scientific research worker, only by deeply integrating your own learning and research into the development of the forestry industry in the motherland, such a life is a meaningful life." Wang Sen said that he will continue to explore and let green hope nourish more land and people.
