Speeds of up to 309.3 km/h: Italian robot racing cars break the world speed record

On April 27, PoliMOVE, a fully autonomous robot race car developed by the Politecnico di Milano team in Italy, broke the world speed record with a speed of 309.3 kilometers per hour. It is reported that the test was conducted on the space shuttle runway at Cape Canaveral at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

The tests were conducted on the space shuttle runway at Cape Canaveral at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

During the test run, the car reportedly reached speeds of 192.2 miles (309.3 km) per vanished, breaking the previous record of 175.49 mph (282.42 km) held by Roborrace.

Professor Sergio Savaresi, a team leader from the Politecnico di Milano, said that when running a car that runs only on algorithms, precision is paramount and that any slight prediction error can lead to completely different results.

In a few days, the team will try to replicate this feat on the Atlanta track, this time on the track rather than on the straights.

The speed of 192.2 mph was achieved after two consecutive attempts in opposite directions of more than 0.6 mph (1 km) to eliminate the effects of the wind.

It is reported that the car itself is an AV-21 manufactured by Dalara Company, which has been equipped with hardware and controls to achieve automation. This includes three LuminarHydra LiDAR sensors to provide 360° long-range sensing for safe autonomy at high speeds.

The car, which took to the track during the Indy Autonomous Driving Challenge in Las Vegas on Jan. 7, was the first head-on race between self-driving cars, with five teams from five countries competing.

During the race, the PoliMOVE team's car won the gold medal at 172.9 miles (278.4 kilometers) per hour.

Savaresi said after the race that the day was the "real birth" of autonomous racing, the real high-speed multi-agent racing was pushed to its limits and "research on self-driving cars will certainly benefit from this historic milestone".

Self-driving racing has come a long way in recent years, but it hasn't always been smooth sailing.

In October 2020, AcronisSIT Autonomous, operated by a Swiss team, was preparing for the world's first self-driving series when the AI stepped on the accelerator, unexpectedly turned to the right, crashed into the separation wall of the pit, and smashed the front end of the sensor equipped with the AI camera, lidar system and sensor that determines the direction of travel.
