TVB Voice Competition Reality Show "Good Voice and Good Drama" was officially launched recently, and twelve artists were divided into three groups to compete in dubbing skills. However, the biggest highlight of this "Cantonese version of "Sound Immersion" is not the participating artists themselves, but a number of TVB Cantonese dubbing team members who "only hear their voices and don't see their people" in the past - they serve as judges or mentors in the show, showing the charm of "sound performance". The voice actor walked from behind the scenes to the front of the curtain, satisfying the curiosity of the audience. On the network broadcast platform of the show, there are constant bullet screens brushing: "Finally meet the real person!" "It turned out to be him!" "This sound is so familiar!" "They're my Cantonese teachers!"

"Childhood Memories" Hidden in dubbing

In the first set of competitions that have been broadcast so far, Long Tiansheng and Huang Fengying served as program mentors, Chen Xin served as the chairman judges, and Huang Qichang, Yuan Shuzhen, Liu Huiyun and He Luyi served as professional judges. To the average audience, their names and looks are very unfamiliar, but as soon as they open their mouths, a sense of familiarity comes over them.

Long Tiansheng has voiced Slingshot Dog in the Toy Story series, Sirius in the Harry Potter series, and Huang Fengying in Doraemon and Shin-Ting in Ninja Chaos, whose voices are the childhood memories of cantonese audiences. Chen Xin is tvb's "sound façade": he has been a TVB announcer since the 1990s, from large-scale evening parties to daily program broadcasts, as long as you open the jade channel, you will definitely be able to hear his voice. Chen Xin also participated in the dubbing of film and television works, and he voiced the narration of the Korean drama "Dae ChangJin", Kenichi Mikami of "Tokyo Love Story", Tatsuya Kashiwa of "Under the Same Roof", and the narration of "Cherry Maruko". In addition, he has also served as a narrator in the classic game show "Prize Gateman" series. This time in "Good Voice and Good Drama", Chen Xin said the audience's long-lost lines: "The prizes in this episode are very rich, including..." Even the host Ruan Zhaoxiang couldn't help but shout: "I really want to start shooting "The Prize Doorman" quickly!" ”

In addition to commenting, scoring and directing the participating artists, the voice actors also show their hands from time to time in the show. Before each round of competition, the voice actors prepared a creative format to introduce the format, making the otherwise boring format explanation session interesting. Huang Qichang, the voice of Fat Tiger in "Doraemon", sang the format with Fat Tiger's characteristic out-of-tune singing. Liu Huiyun and He Luyi, the voices of Concubine Xian and Wei Yongluo in "Yanxi Raiders", seem to have performed a Qing Palace drama with their voices, and also joined the classic old terrier of TVB's "Tongyuan Check": "Lady Ying Luo, under the same palace check, are the talented ladies who come to the palace to compete in the palace all ready?" "Sister rest assured, the four talented ladies have found a partner, and they will perform the fragment designated by the sister..."

It is reported that there are nearly twenty Cantonese voice actors in "Good Voice and Good Drama". In addition to the seven who have appeared so far, "Flower Master Milk" Rebina, "Meng Bo" Zhang Bingqiang, "Little Pill" Zheng Lili, "Flower Wheel Classmate" Liang Weide and so on will appear one after another.

"Line Training Camp" for Young Actors

Unlike mainland dramas, TVB's self-produced episodes are mostly filmed with simultaneous radio, and rarely use dubbing. Many veteran actors have a deep knowledge of line skills, and can even be a voice actor. Liu Jiang, who served as the chairman judge in "Good Voice and Good Drama", is not only the "gold medal green leaf" of film and television works, but also has been involved in film dubbing work since the Shaw film era, and in recent years, he has also served as a Cantonese narrator in the movie "Journey to the West: Sun Wukong Three Dozen White Bone Essences" and the elderly Jiang Ziya played by Jet Li in "Legend of the Fengshen Gods" as a Cantonese voice. Lai Yiu-cheung is also a popular Cantonese dubbing candidate for Hong Kong films, and in this year's May Day film "True Three Kingdoms Matchless", he voiced Cao Cao played by Wang Kai; in 2007, he also voiced the "Pork Guy" played by Huang Bo in the movie "Whenever Changes".

In recent years, tvB young actors have a weak line skills, so they have been criticized by the outside world. Among the twelve contestants of "Good Voice and Good Drama" this time, there are many actors whose lines have been criticized, so the show has become a "line training camp" for young actors to some extent. Among the contestants in the first group, He Guangpei and Feng Yingying are two recognized "line latecomers". Among them, He Guangpei's debut performance is almost "the scene of a car accident", he dubbed a scene in which the feudal landlord Lu Jingu beat his wife Wu Shanci violently in "The Legend of the Valley of Peace", in addition to the "chicken boy sound" and the old problem of incoherent speech, he also committed the dubbing taboo of not being able to speak and lose words, and the judges frequently shook their heads. Liu Jiang, the actor of Lu Jingu, is one of the judges, and after He Guangpei's performance, Liu Jiang ruthlessly gave two words: "Good and bad." ”

Feng Yingying is more like taking a "reverse script". She has been criticized for being noisy and lazy since her debut, but in "Good Voice and Good Drama", she recreated the famous scenes such as the child Liu Sanhao crying and singing in "Palace Heart", the "God Synchronization" of the two heroines of "Ghost and You OT", and the high-energy fighting mouth of Hu Xing'er and Wang Mingquan in "My Savage Grandma", the difficulty coefficient is not low, but Feng Yingying can grasp the character's breath, her speech is clear, and the lazy voice problem has also improved, which makes people look at each other. Judge Chen Xin evaluated Feng Yingying's performance as "unbelievable", and he, who served as a tutor for the pronunciation course of the TVB artist training class, revealed that when Feng Yingying first came to class, his agent had asked him desperately if he was "not saved". But after these years of hard work, Feng Yingying's efforts have finally paid off.

【Back to the History of Hong Kong Cantonese Dubbing】

Once brilliant, once declined, it is expected to make a comeback

In the 1950s and 1960s, Cantonese voice actors began to emerge in Hong Kong, mainly dubbing Chinese films produced by shaw, DenMao and other film companies. Tan Bingwen, the "dubbing king" who died last year, entered the dubbing industry during this period and is recognized as an "old man". In the 1970s and 1980s, Cantonese-language Hong Kong films became mainstream, but due to the immature live radio technology at that time, the films mostly adopted the form of post-dubbing. In fact, many old Hong Kong films do not use the original voice of the actor, and most of the familiar voices of the audience come from the "exclusive dubbing" of these movie stars, such as Tsang Chi Wai's voice is Feng Yonghe, and Bruce Lee's voice is Li Xuebin.

Many "post-80s" and "post-90s" audiences in Cantonese-speaking areas have memories of Cantonese dubbing mostly from Japanese animation imported by TVB. TVB began translating Japanese animation in the 1970s, producing Cantonese dubbed versions of classic anime such as Cherry Maruko, Doraemon, Dragon Ball, and Saint Seiya. These animations are mostly broadcast after school, weekends and other times, and have become childhood memories of audiences in Cantonese-speaking areas. However, in recent years, the TVB dubbing team has been in turmoil, and many familiar voices have disappeared: Lu Sujuan, who voiced Nobita Nobita in "Doraemon", and Lin Baoquan, who voiced Doraemon, died of illness in 2006 and 2015 respectively; and with the decline of TVB's business conditions, senior voice actors such as Feng Jintang, the "Star Arrow" of "Saint Seiya", and Zeng Peiyi, the "Moon Hare" of "Sailor Moon" of "Sailor Moon", were also forced or voluntarily resigned in 2020. Due to the shortage of voice actors, the phenomenon of one-person playing multiple characters in cartoons has become more and more frequent, and the quality of voiceovers has also begun to decline.

In addition, TVB's Cantonese dubbing training courses, which have been held irregularly since 1990, have not been opened for seven years; from 2020, TVB's Pearl Tv has cancelled all bilingual broadcasts. However, since Zeng Zhiwei and Wang Zulan returned to TVB in Charge of Variety Production in February this year, the status of the Cantonese dubbing team has been improved, and the Cantonese dubbing staff training class will also be reopened to absorb new blood for the dubbing team.
