Dod Procter | Figurative painter
Morning Morning, 1926
Dodd Proctor (1890-1972), English artist and wife of the artist Ernest Proctor. Focusing primarily on painting figures, her most famous painting Morning (RA 1927) caused a national sensation at the time. This is a large portrait of Cissie Barnes, the daughter of a local fisherman, reclining. The work was bought by the Daily Mail for the nation and is today in the collection of the Tate Gallery.
Proctor studied with her husband at art schools in England and Paris, both of whom were influenced by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements.
They often work together as a couple, sometimes share commissions, and sometimes present their work together in exhibitions. Proctor was a lifelong artist who remained active in the painting world after the untimely death of her husband in 1935.
After the death of her husband, Ernest, Proctor traveled to the United States, Canada, Jamaica and Africa. She died in 1972 and was buried in St. Hilary Church in Cornwall, adjacent to her husband.
She was a member of several artists' organizations, such as the Nurin School, and in 1966 became president of the St. Yves Artists' Society (STISA). Her work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy several times.
