According to CINNO Research Industry News, display panel maker BOE (BOE) recently signed a contract with Apple to supply organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels to the iPhone 14, which will be released in October this year. So far, BOE has been limited to supplying Apple with replacement (refurbished) OLED panels for older iPhones, and this year is the first time BOE has supplied OLED panels to new iPhones. The market share of Samsung Display and LG Display, which offers 100% OLED panels to the iPhone, is expected to decline.

According to The Korean media Chosun-biz, according to the electronics industry and foreign media reports on April 25, BOE signed an OLED panel supply agreement with Apple on the iPhone 14 earlier this month and will start supplying OLED panels in June. The panel is the iPhone 14 standard 6.1-inch LTPS-TFT OLED panel. The supply is expected to reach 50 million units. That's about 25 percent of the iPhone 14 display supply.

Previously, Apple used oled panels for Samsung display and LG display 100% in its new iPhone. In the iPhone 13 launched last year, Samsung Display supplied 77 million OLED panels, accounting for 73% of the total of 106 million OLED panels. LG shows that 29 million copies are supplied, accounting for 27%. BOE only supplied a limited number of OLED panels for replacement and repair.

BoE's entry into the IPhone 14's OLED panel supply chain is backed by Apple's strategy of supplier diversification. Apple trades with any company that meets the technology they need. Increasing the number of suppliers can improve the stability of product supply and can gain an advantage in price negotiations with suppliers.

For this reason, the industry review said that "Apple has joined hands with BOE in order to contain Samsung display and LG display", and a South Korean display industry related person said, "Since 2017, when OLED was first applied to the iPhone X, Apple has been concerned about the high proportion of supply from Korean companies," and said that "Apple is very likely to achieve its supplier diversification strategy by increasing the supply of BOE OLED panels."

However, Apple limited boe's supply to panels for the iPhone 14 generic model. BOE has been mass-producing LTPO (low temperature polyoxide) TFT OLED panels for the iPhone Pro model since the beginning of this year, but the completion of the technology is not high. Industry insiders said, "Chinese manufacturers still have a technical gap with South Korean manufacturers in LTPO TFT OLED, which is why BOE has formulated a strategy to supply LTPO TFT OLED panels to the iPhone 15 (tentatively).

Since February, OLED production for the iPhone has dropped sharply as BOE has struggled to address the supply of display driver chips (DDIs), suggesting it may not be able to complete the supply of 50 million panels to the iPhone 14. Some forecasts say that JD.com's supply of OLED panels to the iPhone this year is expected to be less than 30 million units.

BOE is currently using LX Semicon's DDI. However, since the beginning of the year, as the shortage of DDI supply has intensified, LX Semicon, controlled by Apple, is prioritizing the supply of DDI for iPhone OLED to LG Displays at Apple's request. Therefore, the supply gap of BOE may be filled by the existing supplier LG Display. Because, from Apple's point of view, the stability of supply is more important than the diversification strategy of suppliers.

At the same time, BOE is rapidly increasing the market share of small and medium-sized OLED through active investment. According to market research firm Omdia, BOE's share of small and medium-sized OLED increased from 5.6% in 2019 to 8.7% in 2020 to 10.5% last year. Omdia expects BOE's share in the first and second quarters of this year to be 14.8 percent and 15.5 percent, respectively.
