In less than two months, St. Petersburg on the Neva River will celebrate its 319th birthday. For this event, although not an anniversary, the St. Petersburg City Cultural Council decided to design a sign to commemorate this moment. Last week, the 319th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg was officially unveiled.
The commemorative sign is inspired by the architecture and sculptures of St. Petersburg, as well as the most popular fonts from about a century ago. The Bronze Knight of Peter the Great is a symbol of St. Petersburg, and its silhouette will appear as the main visual element of the logo.
The vintage font used in the logo is a font created by Leman of the St. Petersburg Font Foundry, which was widely used on posters and logos in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
The color scheme in the logo draws on St. Petersburg's most iconic sights – the Hermitage, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, the Smolny Cathedral and the Beak Column.
"Although the year 319 is not a complete time, on the occasion of Peter the Great's birth, we decided to present a symbol that connects the celebrations in the central and remote areas. The logo is available to all event organizers and other institutions that decide to join the entire St. Petersburg public holiday." Fyodor Boltin, chairman of the St. Petersburg Cultural Council, said. "The logo was designed by Dmitry Terehov, designer of the Institute of Cultural Projects of the Cultural Council of St. Petersburg."
