Why is the BYD Han DM-i hard to find? This test drive gives the answer

author:EV century

The hot market of BYD DM-i models is obvious to all, which not only contributes considerable sales to BYD, strengthens BYD's confidence in stopping production of fuel vehicles, but also drives many other car companies to start pushing PHEV models.

In March, the SALES OF BYD HAN FAMILY REACHED 12,359 UNITS, OF WHICH HAN EV SALES EXCEEDED 10,000 UNITS AGAIN, AND HAN DM INCREASED BY 524.9% MONTH-ON-MONTH. Since its listing, the cumulative sales volume of the Han family has exceeded 190,000 units. Within 10 hours of the opening of the pre-sale, the number of orders for Han DM-i exceeded 12,000 units, which showed its popularity. Why is Ham DM so popular?

Why is the BYD Han DM-i hard to find? This test drive gives the answer

On April 8, I test-drove the Han DM-i in Chengdu and found the answer to this question.

Really fuel efficient

As an alternative to traditional fuel vehicles, one of the main selling points of plug-in hybrid technology is fuel saving. Under the blessing of DM-i super hybrid technology, one of the main selling points of Han DM-i is fuel saving, and its fuel consumption per 100 kilometers under NEDC conditions is 4.2L (officially released data, tested according to the working condition method). The test drive organizers arranged a fuel-saving challenge, and the average fuel consumption measured by several batches of participating media was 4.1L/100km, and the lowest power loss fuel consumption reached 3.5L/100km.

The vehicle I test drove had a total of three occupants, all of whom were adult men. The fuel saving challenge was driven by one of the media, the whole process was not turned on, and the battery power at the beginning of the trip was 19%. The final result was 3.6L/100km, ranking second among all the participants.

Why is the BYD Han DM-i hard to find? This test drive gives the answer

The test drive time is relatively abundant, the journey is relatively long, and the three people in the same car have driven different sections of the road, including highways, urban congested roads and mountain roads, and everyone's driving style is different. In the end, we judged that if it were not for the purpose of winning the race, driving normally according to daily habits, the average fuel consumption is expected to be around 5L/100km, considering that Han is a medium and large sedan with a weight of 2 tons, this fuel consumption result is still very satisfactory.

Why is Han DM-i's energy consumption so prominent? On the one hand, it is related to its efficient oil-electric drive system. The hybrid system mounted on the HamM-i consists of a Special Turbocharged 1.5Ti engine with a thermal efficiency of more than 40% in the Snap Cloud-Plug-in Hybrid, an EHS electromix system and a front-drive motor, and the battery is a power blade battery for hybrid models. The overall design concept of this system is "more electricity, less oil and efficient oil", according to the pure electric endurance of 121km and 242km, Han DM-i has two versions, the corresponding NEDC working conditions comprehensive fuel consumption of 4.2L/100km and 4.5L/100km respectively. Even in the urban scene under the condition of losing electricity, the proportion of electric drives is still as high as 99%. After the engine intervenes, due to the speed regulation of the motor, the engine can always work in the efficient range.

In addition to the efficient drive system, on the other hand, because its wind resistance coefficient is as low as 0.233Cd, the aerodynamic performance of the whole vehicle is outstanding, and the energy consumption during driving is also reduced. In fact, more than half of the power of the vehicle when driving at high speed is used to overcome air resistance, and the lower the wind resistance coefficient of the vehicle, the higher the energy efficiency.

The driving texture is superior

As a medium-sized and large car priced in the range of 200,000-300,000 yuan, the driving texture of Han DM-i is fully worthy of its price, which is estimated to be an important reason for the popularity of this car. First of all, the power is relatively strong. The maximum engine power of this car is 102 kW, the maximum torque is 231N.m, the maximum power of the front drive motor is 145 kW, the maximum torque is 316 Nm, and the new car has an acceleration time of 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. Although it is not as powerful as the More Powerful Han DM-p version, the DM-i power is still relatively abundant overall, and daily use is definitely enough.

Although it is a PHEV model, the driving experience of the HamM-i is still relatively close to that of an electric vehicle, especially when driving at medium and low speeds, the power output is very smooth. When accelerating sharply, the engine and the electric motor are powered at the same time, erupting a powerful energy, and the overall feeling is relatively smooth, but the power of the turbine at the moment of intervention is still slightly prominent.

The chassis of the HamM-i was tuned by former Mercedes-Benz chassis expert Hans Kirk, the overall feeling is to take a balance between handling and comfort, you can feel the thickness and tightness of the chassis during the drive, the front McPherson independent suspension + rear multi-link independent suspension structure filters the road bump thoroughly, feeling a little more comfortable.

When cornering at high speed, the support of the suspension is very strong, the driver in the car does not feel the roll of the body is not obvious, and because the wrapping and support of the integrated sports seat are better, the driver can complete the turning operation with relative ease. Viewed from the outside of the car, the posture of the entire body when cornering is also very graceful, and the roll is almost invisible.

The car has three driving modes, namely NORMAR, SPORT and ECO, in addition, there is a grass/gravel/snow mode. In the three main driving modes, there is a more obvious difference in power response. In addition, the energy recovery intensity also corresponds to the driving mode, the strongest in eco mode, close to single pedal mode, SPORT mode to release the accelerator pedal, the vehicle's gliding is almost the same as the traditional fuel vehicle's feeling.

In addition, the NVH performance of The HamM-i is also excellent, when the vehicle is speeding on the highway at a speed of 100 km per hour, the actual measured noise in the car is only 63.4 decibels (the official data is 62 decibels when driving at 120 km per hour).

Overall, as the flagship model of BYD Automobile and a medium- and large-sized sedan priced at 200,000-300,000 yuan a day, the driving texture of BYD Han DM-i is worthy of its positioning and price.

Assisted driving stability needs to be improved

The Han DM-i model tested by the author this time is a version priced at 236,800 yuan and with a pure electric endurance of 121km, and its auxiliary driving ability can reach the level of mainstream L2 assisted driving in the current market. The driving assistance capabilities of the new model, which went on sale on April 10, have been fully upgraded to reach the level of L2.5.

Driving assist function is very simple to turn on, the opening button is on the left side of the multi-function steering wheel, which can be opened with a single click. To the right of the open button is the cruise speed adjustment button (up and down), and on the far right is the adjustment button for the distance from the car in front. The main functions are distributed on the left side of the multi-function steering wheel, which is very convenient to use.

When both ACC Adaptive Cruise and LKA Lane Keeping are turned on, two green icons (steering wheel and vehicle icon) will be displayed in the right half of the dashboard, as well as cruising speed.

In my actual experience, the commonly used driver assistance functions of ACC adaptive endurance, LKA lane keeping, and lane departure warning are very stable. The only thing missing is the automatic lane change with turn signals.

In the highway test drive, I experienced several times the turn signal automatic lane change function, in the target lane without a vehicle, the car can complete the automatic lane change, but the whole process is very slow, the vehicle's reaction, action are relatively slow.

However, this is not the most serious problem. After completing the lane change, the steering wheel of the vehicle is not automatically corrected, resulting in the vehicle will continue to deviate from the target lane, even if the turn signal is reset after entering the target lane, the direction of the vehicle is still not reversed, requiring manual intervention, which actually means that the automatic change fails.

In addition, after turning on ACC Adaptive Cruise, I twice had my hands completely off the steering wheel for more than 1 minute, but the vehicle did not have any prompts or warnings that required me to hold the steering wheel, and the ACC function did not exit. Obviously, this is not conducive to safe driving.

According to reports, the new Han DM-i adopts Bosch's full set of assisted driving solutions, and the auxiliary driving function and its stability and reliability have been greatly improved, and it is expected to avoid the above problems.
