Juarez was Mexico's first Indian-born president and national hero. He was born into an Indian peasant family near the city of Oaxaca and is a pure-blood Sapitik Indian. Juarez lost his parents at the age of 3 and was raised by his uncle. In his early years, he worked as a servant and apprentice to the rich, and later had the privilege of attending a Catholic theological school. In 1829 he was admitted to the Oaxaca Academy of Sciences and Arts, specializing in law and politics.
