Roadside classics – the Gill 157 series, which has been produced for nearly 40 years

The Gil 157 is another three-bridge 6×6 drive car produced by the Likhachev Automobile Factory in Moscow, Ussyl, following the Gies 151. It is similar but different in appearance to the Gis 151 and Gil 151, and the rear singleton design is one of the differences between the Gil 157 and the Guise 151 in appearance. The appearance of the Gill 157 is similar to the Jiefang CA30A model produced by China First Automobile Factory, it is the prototype of the Jiefang CA30A, but it has its own unique design in both the exterior and the interior.

The Gill 157 was also the evergreen of Soviet cars, which began production in 1958 and underwent two major improvements in 1961 and 1978, successively into the Gill 157K and The Gill 157KD, until the Gill 157KD was completely discontinued in 1994. What is even more exciting is that the country actually preserves the Gill 157, which was born in the 1950s, so that we can still appreciate its style today.

Gill 157 was produced from September 18, 1958 to October 1961. In contrast to the Gies 151, the Gil 157 was changed from rear twin to rear single tire form, the spare tire was reduced from two to one, and the spare tire frame behind the cab was eliminated and placed on the right side of the frame, under the carriage. The position of the carriage is more forward, close to the rear of the cab, which correspondingly reduces the rear overhang length of the frame by 250mm, and also reduces some of the vehicle length. The Wheelbase of the Gil 157 is the same as that of the Giss 151, which allows the vehicle to have a shorter rear suspension and a greater departure angle, improving passability. At the same time, the load is distributed more evenly along the axle, the total weight is reduced, and the ground clearance is increased.

Although the fuel tank on the Gis 151 located on the right side of the frame was eliminated on the Gil 157, a 65L auxiliary fuel tank was added to the inside of the end of the frame. In addition, the rubber pads on the engine support have been improved, the joint specifications on the vehicle pipeline have also been changed, and the high speed ratio of the transferor has been adjusted, with a high gear ratio of 1.395 and a low gear ratio of 2.44. The length of the half-shaft of the mid-rear axle has been increased due to the change of wheels to the rear single tire form, and the wheelbase of the Gil 157 is also different from that of the Gis 151. In subsequent production, the parts on different batches of Gill 157 vehicles have also changed. For example, after 1960, the circuit of the vehicle was changed from positive iron to negative pole iron.

The square cabin car modified with the Gill 157 chassis on the picture still maintains a relatively good appearance after years of vicissitudes, and although some dust has fallen in the cabin of the car, there is no particularly serious damage, and it is very difficult for an old car from the fifties to be preserved like this. The Jill 157 is equipped with a tire central inflation and deflation system that allows the driver to set and adjust the tire pressure on the car according to road conditions and needs. However, the pipes of the central inflation and deflation system of the tires on this car have been lost.

The car is equipped with a Gill 157 inline 6-cylinder water-cooled gasoline engine, using Soviet standard A66 gasoline, with a bore of 101.6 mm (4 inches), a stroke of 114.3 mm (4.5 inches), a displacement of 5.55 liters, and a compression ratio of 6.2. The bore and stroke data are the same as those of the previous generation, the Gies 151. Maximum power 109 hp / 2600 r / min, maximum torque 340 N m / 1100 - 1400 r / min.

Connected to the engine is a two-piece dry clutch, the transmission is a 5-speed manual transmission with a maximum gear ratio of 0.81. The rear axle adopts a central single-stage reduction bridge with a main reduction ratio of 6.67. It uses 9.0×18 wheels and 12.00-18 tires. The maximum speed is 65km/h, the fuel consumption is 42L per 100 km, the fuel tank volume is 150+65L, the driving range is about 510km, and the maximum wading depth is 850mm.

Unlike the Liberation CA30A, the Jill 157 front axle shaft head has a protruding tip.

The Gill 157 began production using the same MKZ-K-K-84 carburetor as the Gill 151, and switched to the MKZ-K-K-84M carburetor in the fourth quarter of 1961, changing the idle system, main oil supply system, accelerator pump system and float mechanism. In October 1961, the Gill 157 was modified into a Gill 157K car with an engine model of the Gill 157K, using the components of the upcoming Production Gill 130, including a monolithic clutch, synchronous transmission, drum hand brake, and brake combination valve. With the change of clutch device, the design of the flywheel has also changed, the structure and shape have been changed, and the weight has been reduced by 2.6 kg. The gir 157K's transfer case has also been improved, with a low-speed gear ratio changed from 2.44 to 2.27 and a high-speed gear ratio from 1.395 to 1.6.

The Gill 157 used Type 12.00-18 tires, and the pipes of the tire center inflation and deflation system on this car had been lost.

The Gill 157K, which was produced from May 1964 to December 1971, added right-view mirrors, and in December 1971, it was converted to a cab with an unopenable windshield. The Gill 157K windshield, produced from 1972 to July 1977, is not openable, so the hinge is not visible on the window in the driver's direction. Since July 1977, the new rim has been used, and the structure is different from the old product. From October 27, 1977, the Gil 157K was produced at the Ural Automobile Engine Plant in Novo-Uralsk, in addition to the Likhachev Automobile Plant in Moscow.

Taillights that have been damaged

In June 1978, the Gill 157K was modified to the Gill 157KD, with an engine model of the Gill 157KD and a bore reduced by 1.6mm to 100mm, the same as the Gill 130. Displacement 5.38 liters, compression ratio 6.5. Maximum power 110 hp / 2600 r / min, maximum torque 350 N m / 1100-1400 r / min. The payload of the Gill 157KD has also increased, with a road load of 5 tons and an off-road load of 3 tons.

The Gill 157KD and its modified cars were mass-produced at the Likhachev Automobile Plant in Moscow until April 14, 1982, in small batches until 1988, at the Ural Automobile Engine Plant in Novo-Uralsk until February 8, 1991, with a small amount of sporadic production until 1994.

The Gill 157K windshield produced after 1972 is not openable, and the hinges and fixtures are removed from the windows in the driver's direction.

The cab of the Gill 157 is actually not very comfortable, and the interior space is not large, but this chassis still has some advantages. As early as the autumn of 1957, when the Gill 131 was developed, the Gill 165 model car was prototyped using the chassis of the Gill 157 car, as well as the Gill 120VK 130 hp engine and cab of the Gill 130L model car, but the test results were not good, and finally the designers developed the gill 157's next-generation Gill 131 car (in fact, the Gill 120VK inline 6-cylinder engine was not mass-produced, and the Gill 130L was ultimately not produced. The designers turned to the 8-cylinder Gill 130M, although the prototype was still not produced.)

In 1976, the Gill 4311 was developed using the chassis of the Gill 157K, using a 110 hp Gill 157KD engine, a transistor igniter, an improved cab and bumper, and the front face grid was horizontal, which looked a bit like the Jiefang CA30A car, but the Gill 4311 was also not energy-produced. The Gill 157KDM car, built in 1984, was replaced with the cab of the Gill 130 and Gill 131 and the compartment of the Gill 131 on the basis of the Gill 133KD, but the result was still insufficient.

On the left is the brake pressure gauge, on the right is the tire pressure gauge, and the original tire pressure gauge also has the words sand, arable land, swamp and snow marked in Russian.

When the Gill 157 was first put into production in the 1950s, the Likhachev Automobile Plant produced a truck with a jill 164 modified from the Guise 151, using a cab that was somewhat similar to the Gil 157. By the 1980s, when production was about to be discontinued, Gill had begun production of the Gill 164's successor, the Gill 130, and the Gill 4331, a replacement for the Gill 130.

Even after gill 157's replacement model Gill 131 has been put into production for many years, the Gill 157 series of cars with a long history has not only not stopped production, but also upgraded itself with the technology of future models, so that the old products have a new brilliance, making it and the larger tonnage Gil 131 form a high-low collocation complement, to meet the user's demand for low-power small tonnage off-road trucks.

Today, the more than 100-year-old Likhachev Automobile Factory has ceased to exist, and even the factory building has been demolished. Gill's predecessor, Amo, was born in 1916 before the October Revolution, rising from the red flag-waving Soviet era and declining after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the nineties. Seeing this weather-beaten Jill 157 again now makes people feel a little sorry in the excitement...
