Eighty-six, Huyang Daxu Village's jumping five rampant
Xing Shaoshan
Dancing five rampant is a dance, everywhere, I am talking about the dancing of the five rampant in Daxu Village, Tuhuyang.
The "five rampants" are evil gods who often do bad things in the human world, stealing things, robbing, setting fires, and flirting with women; but they like to play pranks, and put the things that are stolen from one family and put them in another house, and if they see someone pleasing to the eye, they will give him all the things.
Formed on both sides of the Xu River, the "Five Rampant Jumping Society" and the "Dancing Bodhisattva" are the reverence and remembrance of the people on both sides of the Xu River for the excavation of the Changxing Jingxi River by Zhang Bo (known as the "Emperor of Qishan") in the Western Han Dynasty and the diversion to Guangde, thus creating a form of artistic performance, called "Dancing Five Rampant". This is actually a cultural form with regional characteristics bred by the ancient Xuhe people, which is mainly based on praying for the import of Ding Ding and the social antai, and pinning on the beautiful vision and wishes of the villagers. As a result, the people of Huyang, especially Daxu, who are located on the shores of Shiusu Lake, have also joined the ranks of the five rampant jumps. The reason why the people of Huyang Daxu joined the ranks of this group was caused by a special history.
Legend has it that the Surname Xu moved to Huyang during the Tang Qianfu years and settled in a place called Scissors Strand in Huyang, about the time of the sixth generation of Xu's family, one winter, heavy snow flew, ice and snow, and then water, due to the low terrain of the Scissors Strand, Xu's residence in the Scissors Strand was flooded with ice water. Since then, the people of Daxu Village have always hoped to eliminate the flood, and the jumping of the five rampant reflects this desire of the people, and later the jumping of the five rampant has gradually arisen here and has been passed down to this day.
Dancing the "five rampant" is a scene caused by villagers dressed in ancient costumes or picking baskets, or carrying flags, or banging gongs, or beating drums, causing a lively and jubilant scene, and then the main characters appear one by one. First, five strong men armed with five-colored canopy and five-colored costumes entered the scene; then four dressed in colorful clothes and masks dressed as Taoists, land masters, monks, and judges entered; then five people wearing armor, golden plumes on their shoulders, and holding two knives in their hands. These performers wearing red, blue, yellow, black and white five-color clothes (that is, representing the five square heavens and earth, and also secretly combining the colors of wood, fire, gold, water and earth), wearing five-color masks, and holding five-color clothing tools, in the sound of gongs and drums, or walking, or dancing, or lying down, or jumping, do strange dance movements, giving people an ancient and magical feeling.
Dancing five rampant dancing to the music. In terms of music, there are "Big Gong and Drum Band", "Little Gong and Drum Band" and "Blowpipe Band". Musical instruments include "Big Gong and Drum Band" such as Tang Drum, Su Gong, Da Gong, Rao Cymbal, Xiao Gong, and Long Horn; "Little Gong and Drum Band" has plate drums, big gongs, small shackles, small gongs and tang gongs; "Blow pipe band" has big gongs, small gongs, bamboo flutes, etc. The five rampant music cards include "big gong and drum" with long sets, fast fans, twelve times, serial sets, and small five sets; "small gongs and drums" have small ten sets; "Oh Na song cards" have yang song tones, eight immortals floating sea tones, foreign tones, mortal tones, and seed wheat tones; "bamboo flute music cards" have foreign tones, and so on.
Dancing Five Rampant is performed in the form of wearing masks and pullovers, with special costumes and props such as weapons, holding objects, and horse lanterns, and its performance has a relatively fixed village space in the inheritance area; there are characters, masks, footwork, postures, and music, which have a high artistic appreciation. As a symbol of the ritual, the dance condenses the process of the ceremony, highlights the stakes between gods, people and ghosts, and expresses the humanistic pursuit of "grain abundance" and "world peace" with exaggerated movements, powerful percussion instrumental music, stylized dance steps and formations, masks with peculiar images and brightly colored costumes, etc. Compared with the rituals, it has a more artistic and life atmosphere. In the past, the people of Huyang were always in front of floods and always wanted to seek a form of protection, especially in Daxu Village, and the five rampant jumps made people's wishes satisfied. Mr. Lu Xun's hometown shaoxing is also a water town, Mr. Lu Xun in the "Chao Hua Xi Shi" has a reminiscent essay "Five Rampant Society", also wrote out this kind of jumping five rampant, it can be seen how the people of the water town respect and praise such a water hero as Zhang Bo in the Western Han Dynasty, which is probably the common voice and will of the people of the water town, so the jump five rampant in all countries and places, but the form is not exactly the same.
