Cases of severe acute hepatitis in children have been reported in several countries

The cause of this hepatitis is unclear

WHO is alert

The World Health Organization issued a communiqué on April 15 saying that the United Kingdom reported to WHO 10 cases of severe acute hepatitis in children in Scotland on the 5th of this month. Three days later, the number of such cases reported nationwide rose to 74. Some of the patients are in a serious condition, and 6 children have received liver transplants.

Its source is not yet known, and both the World Health Organization and the Ukish authorities have sounded the alarm.

According to the communiqué, the above-mentioned patients reported in the UK are mainly children under 10 years of age, and the clinical syndrome of the confirmed cases is manifested as acute hepatitis, with a significant increase in liver enzymes, usually accompanied by jaundice, sometimes with gastrointestinal symptoms. In some cases, symptoms have progressed to acute liver failure.

The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) released news on the 19th that not only in the United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland, but also in Denmark and the Netherlands and other countries have also recorded cases of acute hepatitis in children of unknown origin. The 3 patients reported in Spain were between the ages of 22 months and 13 years. The U.S. Department of Health has identified nine cases of hepatitis like this, all in Alabama, with patients aged 1 to 6 years, two of whom require liver transplants.

As of now, the causes of this hepatitis are unclear. WHO has informed that laboratory analysis has ruled out the possibility that these cases are caused by hepatitis A, B, C, D and E viruses, but in some cases the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) or adenovirus (Adenovirus) has been detected.

The European CDC noted that investigations continue in all countries that have documented cases of hepatitis of unknown origin. The agency's statement stressed that "at present, the exact cause of hepatitis in these children remains unknown". In early April, WHO said it would not recommend restricting travel to the UK or any other country with cases of hepatitis of unknown origin, nor did it recommend restricting trade with them.
