Musk misunderstood Web3!

Musk misunderstood Web3!

Author | Yun Zhao

Since 2020, Web3.0 has become a mainstream topic of social concern from a vague field of research. If the metacosm is the top stream, Web 3.0 is comparable to the hot chicken in the technology circle. For a time, a large wave of dense Web 2.0 capital continued to invest heavily in the layout of Web 3.0, and even the fashionable music industry could not resist its temptation and played NFT.

Coinmarketcap data shows that as of now, the total market capitalization of the crypto market has reached $2 trillion, and the development of the entire ecosystem is also improving.

However, red also has red troubles. Tesla CEO Musk joked that "it's not real, more like marketing terms", and former Twitter CEO Dorsey directly attacked: "Users don't actually own Web3 products, the actual owners of Web3 are the venture capital firm (VC) behind the project and its limited partners (LPs), and Web3 can never be separated from the incentives they set." Ultimately, Web3 will be a centralized entity with different tags."

Admittedly, there is reason to question whether it is a hoax or not!

PART 01

Ideal for Web 3.0

Tim Berners Lee, the father of the World Wide Web in 2020, expressed his disappointment with the current Internet in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, saying that "the spirit of the Internet should be decentralized, but in some companies have embraced the Internet as a monopoly alliance."

Web3 is not really a technology, it is just a term. Coined by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, a term based on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology.

In April 2014, gavin described his vision for Web3.0 in his article "Why We Need Web3.0" after writing the Ethereum Yellow Book:

People will use web browsers, but they may be called "wallets" or "keystores". Browsers (and components such as hardware wallets) will represent a person's assets and identity online, allowing us to pay certain fees or prove who we are without having to appeal to a bank or identity service. There is still room for trustworthy parties, insurance services, backup services, etc. But their tasks will be commoditized and their activities can be verified. As these service providers are forced to compete in global, open and transparent markets, web users will be free from price gouging and rent-seeking.

Web 3.0 will create a new global digital economy, create new business models and markets, work with Google and Facebook to disrupt platform monopolies, and generate a lot of bottom-up innovation. Cheap government attacks on our privacy and freedoms, such as extensive data trawls, censorship and propaganda, will become more difficult.

Gavin hopes to reshape the Internet from the software level through the P2P protocol to create a new Internet architecture and provide decentralized network services, and the gradually mature Ethereum architecture can not meet its Web 3.0 vision.

The same is true in China, last year Ali fined 18.2 billion yuan and imposed anti-monopoly penalties of 3.442 billion yuan on Meituan, which caused widespread concern in society. When people are discussing how to reclaim the power of the Internet manufacturers so that they cannot monopolize the entire Internet, Web 3.0 has also been mentioned many times with its ability to "reclaim and control the power of the Internet manufacturers to some extent" and has been placed high hopes.

"Web3" in Wikipedia is marked with the following 3 distinguishing features:

"Average bandwidth of 10M"

"Proposing the concept of a personal portal and providing personalized aggregation services based on user preferences"

"By creating a mechanism for the transformation of an intercentricity between individuals and institutions, individuals can also realize economic value"

But if there is no practical mode of operation, these characteristics are nothing more than castles in the air. If there is an example, you can have a real sense of judgment.

Not long ago, there was a bizarre event in the financing circle, and a group called ConstitutionDAO tweeted on Twitter that it would participate in the auction of one of the official editions of the 1787 U.S. Constitution exhibited by Sotheby's, which is extremely precious, there are only 13 copies left in the world, because we lack funds, so we can only take the form of crowdfunding.

After the news was released, a large number of netizens mocked on Twitter, "If you want to bid for the U.S. Constitution, you need to get sotheby's tickets, and the admission ticket for this auction is at least $10 million." ”

In addition to the explosive growth of the previous two days, ConstitutionDAO raised about $2 million a day, and by the time Sotheby's auctioned the U.S. Constitution, it had raised $47 million, according to parity statistics.

However, the much-anticipated ConstitutionDAO did not get its wish this time, and ken Griffin, the richest man from Chicago, narrowly defeated ConstitutionDAO.

Although the ending of the story is slightly weak, the case of ConstitutionDAO can be used as a typical case of understanding the core of Web3.0, analyzing and deducing the starting point and value point of Web 3.0.

First, open rights are what Web 3.0 calls for, opening up high-threshold, near-monopoly rights to creators.

In the case, the $10 million barrier to admission limits the auction to a feast for a few, but through open crowdfunding, the public can enjoy this right.

Analogy to the Internet field, the development of Web2 to this day, one of the biggest criticisms is the formation of an irreversible monopoly. For example, users who brush Vibrato and Kuaishou seem to be free, they can be both content creators and content consumers, but the truth is far less "dashing" than it seems. Because the power of life and death of a piece of content is still controlled by the platform, not the creator.

Some scholars believe that openness is an important feature of the Web 3.0 era, that is, users have full access freedom in different Internet applications and are not restricted by third-party subjects. Centralization, users have actual control over data and information, and online asset construction will become the main characteristics of this era. To explain in layman's terms, at this stage, through a series of protocols, users can not only produce content, but also control their own content.

The second and most important point is to achieve co-construction, sharing and co-creation among users.

Assuming that the U.S. Constitution is successfully photographed by constitution DAO, it will be shared by all users who fund it; what form it will be exhibited, where it will be exhibited, and when it will be exhibited will be decided by the user, and a lot of bottom-up innovation will be generated in the process; and the benefits generated will also be shared by all users.

That's perhaps why the project was able to break down the fact that no autonomous organization could raise $47 million in just one week.

Third, the current Web 2.0 invades personal privacy, major platforms collect user data, for the platform to profit, and in the Web 3.0 stage, with the decentralization of the application, and the on-chain data can be checked, user behavior, data generated and even application protocols can be protected by privacy.

In Web3, developers typically don't build and deploy applications that run on a single server or store data in a single database (typically hosted on and managed by a single cloud provider).

Instead, Web3 applications either run on the blockchain, on the blockchain, on a decentralized network of many peer nodes (servers), or on a combination of both, resulting in cryptoeconomy protocols. These applications are often referred to as dApps (Decentralized Applications), and you will see that the term is often used in the Web3 space.

In order to achieve a stable and secure decentralized network, network participants (developers) can provide the highest quality service to anyone who uses the service in an incentivized manner.

PART 02

Awkward Web 2.5

Using Web2 to do Web3 is destined to be Only Web2.5!

The consequence of relying on Web 2.0 to do projects in the name of Web3.0 is that the Web3 project is doing the same thing in the clouds, but it is ridiculed by the singing of the faders: Web3, which has always been advertised as decentralized, has not been done at all, and the security problems in the Web2 world also exist in Web3.

To date, web 3.0 projects, or "decentralized" applications (DAPPs), have relied heavily on Web2 components: the use of centralized domains that can be taken away or destroyed at any time, centralized storage that can be reviewed and transparent to large-scale monitoring, and browser extensions such as Metamask or Phantom that Google can disable at any time, will immediately confuse 99% of users of "decentralized" applications about how to access them.

BadgerDAO is a DeFi project that was seized $120 million by hackers for centralizing user interfaces. In addition, the NFT trading platform OpenSea also exposed a theft incident: in about 3 hours, a total of 254 tokens were stolen, which caused a late-night panic among the site's large user base.

It illustrates why this "Web 2.5" approach is wrong.

PART 03

Where is Web 3.0 headed?

In the eyes of some people, Web 2.5 does not have the gene of Web 3.0 after all, and only by using decentralized components can it truly reshape the old Internet world.

A company called PointLabs calls this decentralized component refactoring of the Internet: point network. Unlike the existing Web2 scaffolding, it is a virtual space that is completely disconnected from the old Internet, and like blockchain, this kind of network may be the real Web 3.0.

The Founders of PointLabs also gave a fairly straightforward definition of Web3.0: a long-standing dream of Web3 technology enthusiasts is to have a completely decentralized Internet that is unchecked, monitored at scale, and gives direct ownership of data and audiences, without letting large technology intermediaries take their share and assert authoritarian control.

In addition, Point Labs has developed a roadmap to Web 3.0, which is updated frequently. It wasn't just the typical stripe on the landing page, instead they built it into a Trello-like website. It has two areas: the main area shows the infrastructure needed for a decentralized Internet, which is basically complete; the dApp area lists the use cases and potential decentralized applications where the main area is ready and ready to run.

Good things grind more. Decentralized infrastructure may not be popular with all technologists, such as Moxie mentioned in a social media blog: "The purpose of technology is to be static, not to move", "individuals do not want to operate servers by themselves", "software development needs centralized organization and force to do" to question Web3.

But maybe that's the real destination for decentralization. With the soil of decentralization, we can grow truly decentralized DApps, decentralized social networks, development forums, instant messaging networks, and companies that operate in a decentralized way.

PART 04

Web3 developers

Web3 is about building a decentralized world. At present, the most sought-after programming language for Web3 development is Golang, followed by Java, JavaScript, and Rust. The salary of foreign Web3 positions is more objective, with a monthly salary of 45k US dollars to 300 k US dollars, concentrated in project managers, product managers, smart contracts, front-end development, 3D design, graphic design, back-end development, etc.

Musk misunderstood Web3!

In contrast, domestic Web3 development positions are concentrated in blockchain, smart contracts, front-end development, product managers, etc., with monthly salaries ranging from 24K to 80K.

PART 05

Write at the end

Back two years ago, you may still think that Web3 is just a castle in the air. But the rotation of the technical gears often impresses us. Musk misunderstood Web3, it's no longer just a formality!

Whether it is Web2, which has greatly facilitated our life and work, but invisibly creates a monopoly of power, or Web2.5, which is "pursuing form", or Pointlabs-style Web3, which pursues the spiritual core of "decentralization" and cultivates decentralized soil, it is the result of technological and social progress.

Looking at it, there is no question of who will replace whom, because the combination and division between centralization and decentralization is itself a philosophical problem. The coexistence of the two forms will be a harmonious state. Just as the opponents of Web3 now recognize the value of blockchain, cryptocurrency and so on, Web3 shows a trend of technology forward: the value of the individual body is given enough respect, breaking through the shackles, and the value of sharing and co-creation will be truly magnified!
