It was 1936, when the troops were marching to the Wumeng Mountains in Yunnan, Yu Qiuli, then the political commissar of the 18th Regiment, was ordered to lead his troops to intercept the pursuit of the Kuomintang Wan Yaohuang, Yu Qiuli and the regimental commander Cheng Jun commanded the 18th Regiment to circumvent the enemy, and they were ready to rely on the terrain to catch the enemy by surprise.

The regimental commander was safe, but Yu Qiuli's left arm was shot, and at that time, only a simple bandage was given, and Yu Qiuli continued to command the battle until the end of the battle, Yu Qiuli agreed to go to the division's health department for treatment, but at that time, the medical conditions were poor, and only simple treatment could be made.
Unexpectedly, the wound deteriorated later, and even the bones were exposed, Yu Qiuli still insisted on commanding the battle in the front line, and later he dragged his injured arm to climb the snow mountain, walked through the meadow, and persisted for 192 days, until the troops arrived in Gannan, at this time his arm was already black, and if he did not amputate his limbs, he would be life-threatening.
