I met because of scientific research
Sun Lao is a world-famous great scientist, a titan in China's aerospace field, one of the pioneers of artificial satellites and deep space exploration technology on the mainland, and it is a rare blessing for a small researcher to get acquainted with such scientific research and get academic guidance and teachings.
I remember that in June 2006, the unit entrusted me with a research task to cooperate with the Aerospace Science and Technology Group. With a nervous mood, I called the cooperation department of the Aerospace Science and Technology Group and learned that in the process of researching the project, Sun Jiadong, senior consultant of the group, and several other academicians served as academic advisers for the collaborative topic, and could provide guidance and help at any time if there were problems.
At that time, the first thing that came to my mind was that the first artificial earth satellite on the mainland, "Dongfanghong No. 1", was designed and launched by Academician Sun Jiadong. I was still a schoolboy at the time, and coincidentally, on April 24, 1970, the day of the successful launch, was my 12th birthday. Hearing the "Dongfang Hong" music transmitted from space, Sun Jiadong's name was deeply imprinted in his mind. In scientific research, I had the opportunity to meet the idols I worshipped in my childhood, and my excitement overflowed into words, which strengthened my confidence in completing scientific research tasks.
A month later, I received a call from the cooperation department, saying that the aerospace group would ask Sun Jiadong, Qi Faren, Shen Rongjun, and other academicians to listen to the opening report of the research group. My first acquaintance with Elder Sun was at that debriefing meeting, when I made a specific report as the person in charge of the project. At that time, some details could not be remembered clearly, but Elder Sun remembered the dialogue when I reported the rest, and truly realized the true meaning of the sentence "Listening to the words of the king is better than reading ten years of books".
Elder Sun told me that space is a strategic highland for future national security, and if you are engaged in military theoretical research, you can consider giving play to the traction role of military theory and carrying out more relevant research on the theoretical needs of military spaceflight. And told me that he is the chief designer of the mainland Beidou navigation system project, the future will be opened globally, in the military application needs to be urgently strengthened in the research needs of military applications, now there is very little attention and research, this topic of great strategic significance, can you take it as a key research direction, so that the traction of military theory into military space practice.
Elder Sun's remarks should be said to have had a decisive impact on my later research work, and since then I have focused my research on space military theory. After the completion of the collaborative project, a number of studies were carried out with the Aerospace Science and Technology Group, and the opportunity to meet with Elder Sun increased, as long as I met, I consulted Elder Sun, and the elderly gave serious advice every time, which greatly improved my theoretical research ability.
Looking back now, the fact that a great scientist can seriously guide a small researcher shows the height of Sun Lao's character and his persistent attitude towards his career, and the charm of his personality makes us a friend of the year.
After getting acquainted with each other, most of the research topics I engaged in, whether given by superiors or self-selected, were related to the military application of the Beidou navigation system. He has won five awards for his research achievements and published three monographs, including "Future Operations Will Be Launched in Space" and "Introduction to Space Operations". Although the hard work of these scientific research achievements is the key internal cause, it is impossible to achieve it smoothly without the important motivation of Sun Lao's academic guidance.
Draw closer because of humility
Being humble and doing things in a low profile is the deep impression left by the charm of Sun Laoren's personality. I remember the first time I reported on the topic, in the face of all the academicians present, I was in a more nervous mood, and during the break of the meeting, Elder Sun took the initiative to ask me, listen to your accent is northeast, right? I said that my ancestral home is Zhuanghe, Liaoning. He immediately smiled and said, my hometown Liaoning Wafang shop, we are pure fellows. Elder Sun and I had a cordial and brief chat, which not only relaxed the mood, but also narrowed the distance between each other, and truly felt a scientist who was admired by the mountains, without a bit of condescending shelves, and it was comfortable to get along with.
Sun Laoqian's low-key attitude is reflected in many small links, and I am deeply moved in retrospect. In the years of acquaintance with Sun Lao, every time he studied a topic or held a meeting together, he recorded the book and the pen without leaving his hand, not only listened carefully but also remembered carefully, and there was a modest mantra when communicating with people: I don't understand this problem very well, let's discuss and study together.... No matter who the other person is, always put themselves in a mutually equal position, making people feel easy to approach and willing to approach. Elder Sun's humble academic attitude taught me and all the comrades in the research group a lesson that could not be learned in books, and had a qualitative impact on the research work.
For many years of contact and exchange with Elder Sun, whether it is a research topic or a meeting, his usual briefcase is taken by himself, and he has never seen the secretary follow him. People around him told me that low-key and humble is the style of life that Elder Sun has always adhered to, he rarely bothers the secretary, never plays the score, and immediately respects after listening.
There is a famous saying: "Modesty and low-key can achieve people, can make people fly higher, and go farther." In Elder Sun's words and deeds, I saw the archetype of what the famous saying said, and I understood the connotation of this famous saying more deeply.
In September 2009, the Aerospace Group and our unit jointly held a seminar in Harbin, I was responsible for preparing the conference and screening papers, often because of the relevant academic issues of the paper to consult Elder Sun, he humbly said after each time he expressed his opinions, I am engaged in technology, military theory level of the problem still needs you to check more, my suggestions are only for reference. He never appeared in the posture of a great academician, so that people were particularly willing to communicate with him and discuss research issues.
At that seminar, Elder Sun rushed to Harbin to participate in the whole process, and there was a small matter that reflected Sun Laoqian's low-key style at the meeting, which made me unforgettable. On the morning of the second day of the meeting, the meeting arranged a group photo, Sun Laoyin rushed to the venue when the traffic jam, everyone lined up to wait for him, the leader let me go to the door to pick up. About five minutes later, Elder Sun's car arrived, and before I could get to the door, Elder Sun hurriedly opened the door and got out of the car, and when he saw me, he said that he was sorry for being late, because I was late for everyone to wait too badly. For an old man who was over eighty years old at the time, saying that walking is actually a trot, and as soon as he entered the venue, he apologized to everyone one after another. Elder Sun's expression and words of sincere apology at that time made everyone present unmoved.
Afterwards, I often think that Elder Sun once served as the former vice minister of the Ministry of Aerospace Industry, won the country's highest science and technology award, engaged in aerospace work for more than 60 years, presided over the development and launch of countless satellites, not only realized the networking and application of the Beidou satellite navigation system, as one of the main advocates of the mainland lunar exploration project, but also served as the chief designer of lunar exploration, such a milestone figure in the history of continental space, doing things is still so humble and low-key, it is difficult to do without strict self-discipline of moral cultivation.

Although he has only known Sun Lao for a few years, his professionalism and rigorous attitude towards scientific research are admirable.
What impressed me most was that every time he had a dedicated and serious attitude, repeatedly deliberated on the key issues in the topic, in-depth arguments, and sometimes remembered academic issues at the dinner table, and studied and discussed with you at any time. I know that Elder Sun, as a scientific research person, is usually very busy and has endless things waiting for him, so every time he asks for advice in person, he does not dare to disturb the old man more. Once, when the time of the report was still early, I asked about the future development trend of Beidou military applications, and Elder Sun gave me answers and guidance very comprehensively, was serious and patient, and did not deal with it perfunctorily.
Elder Sun took a junior's consultation seriously with a rigorous and dedicated attitude, which not only played a key guiding role in my research project, but more importantly, it also affected my positive attitude towards scientific research.
I have participated in many large-scale seminars with Elder Sun, sometimes he has come to the meeting as an expert or consultant to guide, sometimes he will make keynote speeches, and every time Elder Sun arrives, he will listen attentively to the speeches, and he will always keep recording some key issues. Every time there is a meeting, considering that Sun Lao is old and his physical condition is not very good, the conference affairs team suggested that he can not participate in the whole process of the meeting according to his physical condition, and he can go back to rest in advance between meetings, but he has always insisted until the end of the meeting. In the scientific research exchanges with Elder Sun, there is one more thing that can fully reflect elder Sun's professionalism. In the autumn of 2011, when the mainland launched the 14th satellite of the Beidou Navigation System in Xichang, I was invited to participate in the launch observation. After arriving in Xichang, I saw that Elder Sun also arrived at the scene, and when I saw that the old man's actions were not as convenient as before, I asked the organizers of the event, is Elder Sun still coming to the scene to guide at such an old age? The other party told me that every time Sun Lao launched a satellite, as long as time and body permitted, he personally came to the scene to guide, and the professionalism of the old man was exemplary.
Although he has never met With Elder Sun since then, he is often seen on TV at the scene of the star, and every time he sees this scene, he is deeply infected by Elder Sun's spirit of dedication to scientific research. Recalling the small things in the scientific research exchanges with Sun Lao reflects the personality charm and professionalism of this great scientist, and it is the influence of this spirit that has the scientific research complex with Sun Lao's unforgettable friendship.
After I retired, I had no work contact with Elder Sun, but every time Elder Sun appeared in the news, I carefully recorded:
On December 18, 2018, Sun Jiadong was awarded the title of Reform Pioneer, awarded the Reform Pioneer Medal, and was rated as an important promoter of the innovative development of aerospace science and technology.
On September 17, 2019, Sun Jiadong was awarded the "Order of the Republic".
