Walking into the Sanhe Ecological Hope Farm in Meihua Town, Daoxian County, the blooming grapefruit flowers are as white as snow, and the fragrance comes to the nose. Workers are shuttling back and forth under the grapefruit trees, picking newly bloomed grapefruit males in preparation for artificial pollination of the grapefruit trees.
"The grapefruit blooming period is only more than ten days, so we have to complete the pollination of hundreds of acres of grapefruit gardens in more than ten days of flowering, and now we have more than 100 people every day." Gao Feng, head of Daoxian Meihua Town Sanhe Ecological Farm, introduced. Sanhe Ecological Hope Farm has put into production grapefruit planting area of more than 500 acres, every grapefruit flower season, the farm in addition to wind pollination, bee pollination and other ways to let grapefruit natural pollination, but also mainly take artificial pollination to improve the yield and quality of grapefruit. Artificial pollination is to carry out cross-pollination of the stamens and pistils of different varieties of grapefruit flowers, workers will pick different varieties of male grapefruit flowers, cut the flower buds, grind and mark, use a syringe to absorb the ground flower powder, and then by artificially dipping one by one on the female grapefruit flowers, and finally complete the cross-flower pollination process.
"When you order a mother grapefruit flower, about two or three flowers per cluster of flowers, its fruit is very good, if there are too many points, the tree can't bear it." Xiong Shuhua, a technician at Sanhe Ecological Farm in Meihua Town, Daoxian County, told this writer. Through artificial pollination, after nearly 500 pollinations per grapefruit tree on the farm, its fruit set rate can not only reach more than 90%, which is 20 percentage points higher than the natural pollination fruit set rate, but also maintain the excellent characteristics of grapefruit and increase the size and yield of grapefruit. In this way of working, the farm lasts about a week a year.
