KATHMANDU, April 9 (China News Network) -- The Nepal Bari Babe Water Diversion Tunnel Project, which was built by a Chinese-funded enterprise, obtained a performance certificate issued by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of Nepal on the 8th, marking the successful conclusion of the project construction task.

The project was jointly constructed by China Overseas Engineering Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Corporation, and China Railway Second Bureau Group Co., Ltd., and started construction on June 4, 2015, and the water diversion tunnel was completed on April 16, 2019.

The project is Nepal's first cross-basin water transfer project and one of Nepal's "National Pride Projects". The main project is a 12.2 km tunnel designed to divert water from the water-rich Barry River to the previously uneven drought and flooding of the Babe River, which in turn can irrigate a total of 51,000 hectares of farmland in the Badia and Banks regions of central and western Nepal, alleviating local food shortages. At the same time, using the 152-meter gap between the two rivers, a power station with an installed capacity of 48 megawatts can be built in the future, changing the current situation of insufficient power in the central and western regions of Nepal.

This is the first project of the Double Shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to be put into use in Nepal and the first project in the world to use TBM to cross the Sivarik Formation in the Himalayas. It is understood that the project TBM achieved a good boring performance of average monthly progress of 716 meters and a maximum monthly progress of 1202 meters, reaching the international leading level of the same type of TBM, and also won a number of awards.

Now, the two Chinese companies have cooperated again to undertake the construction of the Sunkosimarin Water Diversion Tunnel Project in Nepal. The project is also a "National Pride Project" in Nepal. The contractors will construct a 13.3 km long tunnel to divert the waters of the Sunkosi River to the Marin River to irrigate 122,000 hectares of agricultural land in the Bala, Tahat, Salah and other regions, while constructing a hydropower station with an installed capacity of 28.62 MW to supply electricity to the surrounding area.

It is reported that the Nepal Sunkosimarin Diversion Tunnel Project has completed the construction of sand and gravel plants, TBM launch platform excavation and other node work, the project department pipe segment plant, TBM launch platform and other functional area construction work is in progress, is expected to achieve the TBM starting major node goals in 4 months.
