Will Smith was barred from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years

Since Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Locke at the 94th Academy Awards, he was banned from attending all Oscar events or shows for 10 years.

For the next 10 years, Smith wasn't allowed to attend any other events hosted by Hollywood's top film conglomerates, but the board decided they wouldn't cancel the Oscar for Best Actor he won last month for "King Richard."

David Rubin, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement: "The 94th Academy Awards is a celebration of the many people in our community who have done incredible work over the past year. ”

"However, we saw mr Smith's unacceptable and harmful behaviour on stage that cast a shadow over those moments."

"The Board of Directors has decided that Mr. Smith shall not participate in any Oscar event or project, including but not limited to, the Oscars, in person or virtually for a period of 10 years commencing 8 April 2022."

Smith said in a statement: "I accept and respect the College's decision. ”

College President David Rubin acknowledged that the group's response to the incident was "inadequate" and hoped the decision would "open a time of healing and recovery for all those involved and affected."

He said: "In our televised broadcast, we did not adequately deal with the situation in the room. We apologize for this. ”

"For us, this was an opportunity to set an example for guests, spectators and our Academy family around the world, but we didn't do it because we weren't ready for an unprecedented challenge."

At the march 27 awards ceremony, after comedian Locke joked about the appearance of Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith strode onto the stage and slapped Locke in the face.

Less than an hour later, Smith was on stage with tears in his eyes. After the awards ceremony, he was seen dancing at Vanity Fair's annual Oscar party.

Smith resigned from the Academy on April 1 and issued a statement apologizing to Locke, Oscar producers, nominees and audiences.

Locke's joke about Pinkett Smith references the shaved head of actress Demi Moore from the 1997 film G.I. Jane. It's unclear if Locke knew she had a condition that caused hair loss.

On Friday morning, the Oscar Council met to discuss action against Smith, and board members Steven Spielberg and Ubi Goldberg were invited to decide the actor's fate.

A high-level meeting of Hollywood's major industry group had intended to discuss suspending or firing Smith, but he resigned early on April 1.

While each year's Oscar nominees and winners are voted for by members of the organization, actors don't need to be members of the Oscars to be nominated.

Some have called for Smith's Oscar for Best Actor, but it has been deemed unlikely that Smith's award will be stripped away because the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Roman Polanski were not revoked when they were expelled from the academy after the sexual assault scandal.

Traditionally, the Academy Award for Best Actor winners are invited to present the following year's Best Actress Award, and Smith does not receive that honor.
