According to the latest data from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global semiconductor industry sales reached $52.5 billion in February this year, up 32.4% from $39.6 billion in February 2021 and up 3.4% month-on-month from $50.7 billion in January 2022.

This figure is in line with the previous boost in market sentiment, especially in North America. This monthly sales is compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization and represents a three-month moving average.

Sales growth in the Americas is significant

"Global semiconductor sales remained strong in February, with the eleventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth of more than 20%," SIA said. "Sales into the Americas continued to outpace other regional markets, up 43.2% year-on-year in February." SIA's statistics cover nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip companies, and 99% of the U.S. semiconductor industry's revenue is attributed to its statistical caliber.

In addition to year-over-year sales growth in the Americas, there was significant growth in almost all regions compared to February 2021: Asia Pacific/All Regions (+41.4%), Europe (+29.3%), China (+21.8%), Japan (+21.6%).

Sequentially, growth occurred mainly in Asia Pacific/Others (+18.6%) and Europe (+1.4%), while declines were mainly in Japan (-1.3%), China (-2.3%) and the Americas (-3.0%).

The share of American semiconductor companies has exceeded half

According to IC Insights' 2022 McLean Report Q2 Update, the regional market share of TOTAL SALES for IDM (fab-owned companies), fab-less companies, and IC sales in 2021 will be led by U.S.-based companies. Driven by a 47% share of IDM sales and a 68% share of fabless sales, U.S. companies will account for 54% of the global IC market in 2021.

It was followed by South Korean companies with a share of 22%. Semiconductor companies in Taiwan account for 9% of global IC sales due to their high proportion of fabless IC sales, while European and Japanese suppliers have a 6% share (Taiwan's semiconductor companies surpassEd European companies in the IC industry market share for the first time in 2020).

The future is about the competition between Asia and the United States

In 2021, the MARKET share of IC sales of Japanese companies continues to be in good shape since the 1990s. Japanese companies accounted for nearly half of the global IC market share in 1990, but over the past 30 years, the share of Japanese companies has fallen sharply, to just 6% by 2021. Although the market share decline of European companies is not as good as that of Japanese companies, the year-on-year performance is not ideal. In 2021, European companies will also account for only 6% of the global IC market, down from 9% in 1990.

In stark contrast to the decline in the number of companies in both regions over the past 30 years, the share of IC suppliers in the United States and Asia has been climbing since 1990. As shown in the figure, Asia Semiconductor's share of the global IC market soared from 4% in 1990 to 34% in 2021. The share growth of IC suppliers in Asia is equivalent to a 31-year CAGR of 15.9% ic sales, nearly double the 8.2% CAGR of the total IC market over the same period.

South Korean and Japanese companies have a very low share of the fabless IC segment, while semiconductor companies in Taiwan and Chinese mainland have a very low share of the IDM segment of the IC market. It is worth noting that Chinese mainland semiconductor companies account for only 4% of the global IC market share. Overall, U.S. semiconductor companies currently have the most balanced performance in terms of total market share in the IDM, fabless, and IC industries.
