Xiaoshan Hangwu Mountain Travelogue: Climb the famous mountain of ZhouZhou and listen to the Sanskrit sound of Hangwu

author:Tiger sniffs

Today, I visited the first mountain in the southeast of Xiaoshan, Hangwu Mountain, and this tour is divided into four parts. The first article dock park and the second article Solitaire Zen Temple have been sent earlier. Today's article is the third article, mainly on the scenery of the mountaineering of Hangwu Mountain, and the fourth article will focus on the White Dragon Temple. In fact, there are many scenic spots and monuments on Hangwu Mountain, as well as Jizo Temple, Kek lok Temple, Sansheng'an, etc., due to the failure to go this time, it will be added later.

01 Origin of Hangwu Mountain and its aliases

Hangwu Mountain, also known as Gongshan Mountain, Wangbu Mountain. Hangwu Mountain is named after the ancient Qiantang River ships used this mountain as a navigation marker. It is also called Wang Bushan because Yue Wang Shujian stopped here. Hangwu Mountain is often called Gongshan mountain in history, because its shape is like a Buddha shrine, so it is called "Gongshan Mountain", because of the harmonic sound of "niche" and "Kan", it is now called Kanshan.

Hangwu Mountain has a radius of more than 10 square kilometers, and the main peak is 299 meters above sea level, which is the first peak in the east of Xiaoshan. The hangwu mountain forest is beautiful, the scenery is charming, and the cultural heritage is profound, and the Yuan Dynasty poet Sadula and other poets have visited this mountain and written poems. Temples such as the White Dragon Temple, Dizang Temple, Kek Lok Si Temple, and Solitaire Zen Temple on the mountain have always been the center of Buddhism in the eastern part of XiaoShan, and the incense is flourishing.

Before the Qing Dynasty, Hangwu Mountain had been majestically located on the south bank of the Qiantang River estuary, facing the Ochre Mountain in Beihaining, Jianghai, and the two mountains were called the South Gate. Later, due to the northward shift of the main channel of the Qiantang River, the original southern gate was silted up to Ochre Mountain. Since then, Hangwu Mountain, which once stood on the south bank of the Qiantang River, has since become a famous mountain far away from the river and standing on the vast Xiaoshao Plain.

02 Dock Hill Location

Hangwu Mountain is located between the two towns of Guali and Yaqian in the east of Xiaoshan. Hangwu Mountain is bordered by Kanshan Mountain to the northwest, Guali to the northeast and southeast, and Yaqian Town to the southwest. The main attractions of Hangwu Mountain are the White Dragon Temple, Jizo Temple, Kek Lok Si Temple, Solitaire Zen Temple, and Hangwu Park at the foot of the mountain, Taiping Temple, Ren Bo Nian Memorial Hall, and Sansheng An.

There are three main routes up the hill: the first is up the mountain from the northwest kanshan direction, the second is from the southeast direction up the mountain, and the third is from the east to the side of the Guali Dong'en Village Committee. If you can drive, you can take the winding road from the 1st or 2nd road to the free parking lot next to the White Dragon Temple, but this uphill route is too tasteless. It is recommended to park next to Dong'en Village and take the 3rd walking hiking route, which takes about 1 hour to climb the mountain, and there are many attractions to visit along the route.

If you want to go to Kek Lok Si Temple and Jizo Temple, you can only go alone from the direction of Kanshan Mountain, there is no road between Solitaire Zen Temple and Jizo Temple, I hope that in the future, the Guali Town Government can open the passage between these attractions!

Drive to Hangwu Mountain, pass by Hangmin Village, see an antique archway, quite tall and exquisite, into the archway, is a Hangmin Mountain square, the square is actually a small park. There is also a hangmin village history museum next to the square, but because of the epidemic situation, it has not been visited.

3.2 Dong'en Village

From Hangmin Mountain Front Square to Hangwu Shandong Mountain Entrance, the distance is only 1.4 kilometers, and it takes less than 5 minutes by car. Before coming to the mountain, I passed the office building of the Dong'en Village Committee, which looked quite grand.

At the foot of the mountain there is a dock park, the dock park is built according to the mountain, the trees are luxuriant, the green space is like a yin, the park is built with pavilions, curved corridors and water pavilions, quite a kind of Jiangnan garden charm. There are also new Renbo Memorial Hall, the old Taiping Temple, Wenchang Hall and other attractions in the park. For more information, please pay attention to the author to view.

3.3 Mountaineering

At the entrance of the East Mountain, there is a archway with "Dock Victory" written on the front and "Zhou Dynasty Famous Mountain" on the reverse, and there are couplets on the front and back of the archway. Walking through the archway, you can see two dragons painted on the mountain wall in front of you, and there is an incense burner under the wall for pilgrims to burn incense and worship.

Continue walking up the steps, passing an unnamed four-cornered eaves pavilion on the side of a hillside. Standing by the gazebo and looking out at Guali is also a good choice.

Soon after continuing up, we came to a resting point, which is quite distinctive, two ends are pavilions, one is a double eaves four-corner stone pillar pavilion, the other is a four-corner single-eaves stone pillar pavilion, both pavilions have no name. The two pavilions are connected by a promenade, which is decorated with semicircular arches that look good.

There is a "Merit Monument" under the mountain rock next to the pavilion, on which is engraved the donation of 186,000 yuan by the Shi Wanggui family of Jiangshu Village, Shaoxing County, to build the steps up the White Dragon Temple, which was erected in the summer of 2002.

The pavilion rested a little and began the longest and steepest section of the climbing journey, and after walking this step, the top of the mountain was relatively gentle.

The longest and steepest section of the climb

After climbing this section of the stairs, when I was about to go to the parking lot of the White Dragon Temple, I saw a pavilion on the edge of the cliff, which looked like a beautiful girl dancing on the edge of the cliff. Unfortunately, this pavilion also has no name, let's call it "Hanging Dance Pavilion (Pavilion dancing on the edge of the cliff)"! Standing in the gazebo is comfortable, if in the summer, the cool breeze blows, sitting or lying on the pavilion stool, it should be a feeling of being like a god! The pavilion is also a great location overlooking the scenery under the mountain, and you can see the buildings such as Dock Park, Taiping Temple, Dock Cemetery, and Guali Cultural and Sports Center under the mountain.

A short walk up the pavilion gives you a glimpse of a tower. In ancient times, there was a lighthouse built on Hangwu Mountain to guide the ships traveling around the Qiantang River, which is why this mountain is called Hangwu Mountain. The tower in front of you is the unity of the tower and the pavilion, and there is the Xiaoshan People's Guard Memorial Hall under the tower. Newly built in 2014, the tower is about 28 meters high and has four floors, mainly for displaying martyrs' relics, life and heroic deeds. This memorial tower is not the highest point of Hangwu Mountain, but it is a commanding point, and the idyllic village standing on the hill above the tower can be seen from the bottom.

Next to the memorial tower is the People's Defenders Square, where there are three bronze statue heads completed in 2013 to commemorate the three fire fighters Yin Jinliang, Chen Wei and Yin Zhizhi who sacrificed their lives in the fire.

On the edge of the People's Defenders Square is the parking lot of the White Dragon Temple, and the parking lot looks back at the memorial tower. There is a public toilet and commissary next to the parking lot, and the commissary is preceded by a stone staircase to the white dragon temple.

Continue upwards from the Xiangxian Pavilion, and set up a "White Dragon Temple Reconstruction Monument" on the side of the road, which is a replica of the "White Dragon Temple Reconstruction Monument" embedded in the east wall of the existing White Dragon Temple Apse, which records that the White Dragon Temple was founded in the Northern Song Dynasty (1068-1077), and the Longguang Master traveled to this mountain, and saw that there was a white dragon on the ridge, so he knotted on it. Since its founding in the Song Dynasty, the White Dragon Temple has undergone repeated repairs during the Ming, Qing and Republic of China periods.

Next to the reconstructed monument, there is a long propaganda column, which is filled with poems recited by various dynasties, such as the Yuan Dynasty poet Sadula and the Ming Dynasty poet Wang Wei.

Continuing upwards, there is a tea garden next to the Upper Incense Road, is this a temple planting? From time to time, there are some Buddhist Zen sayings standing next to the road.

After a while, you will reach the main entrance of the White Dragon Zen Temple, where you can enter the White Dragon Zen Temple for a visit (see the later sections). There are steps next to the main entrance to reach the top of the dock. The top of the mountain is a good place to look out over the north of Hangwu Mountain and the Qiantang River. You can see a large area of tea gardens on the west side of the White Dragon Temple. Far to the north is the Qiantang River and the airport (unfortunately, the visibility is not good enough to see the Qiantang River), and the diversion of the Qiantang River and the reclamation of the land have gradually moved the Hangwu Mountain away from the Qiantang River. The northern slopes of Hangwu Mountain are scarred, and the cemetery site has destroyed many mountains and forests.

4.1 White Dragon Zen Temple

The White Dragon Temple on Hangwu Mountain was founded during the Xining period of the Northern Song Dynasty and has a history of nearly 1,000 years. Legend has it that the Dragon Light Master traveled to this mountain and saw a white dragon on the ridge, so he knotted a hut on it. In the third year of the Southern Song Dynasty (1133), shaoxing raised a temple for Guanyin and the White Dragon Statue, so it was named "White Dragon Temple". In the early years of the Qing Dynasty, it was built successively, and it was once a hermitage for Shen Beihai, and later changed to a Zen Temple. In the early Qing Dynasty, Shan Long Zhou poem called "Dragon King Temple", which was rebuilt between Daoguang. From 20 to 30 years of the Republic of China, the main hall was renovated successively. In 2015, a new Daxiong Treasure Hall was rebuilt.

The mountain gate of the White Dragon Zen Temple is facing west, probably because the southern end of the White Dragon Temple is close to the steep cliff, and it can only be opened to the east. The mountain gate is a double-eaves building with two signs hanging on it, namely "White Dragon Zen Temple" and "Hangwu Listening to Fan". Next to the gate stands a plaque with an introduction to the history of the White Dragon Zen Temple and the overall structure of the temple.

Temple Introduction Card

The White Dragon Zen Temple is currently a four-fold structure, the first main building is the Tenno Hall, then the Yuantong Hall, the third is the Main Hall (the Old Hero Treasure Hall) and the newly built Daxiong Treasure Hall. Next to the new Daxiong Treasure Hall, there are also three holy halls and a medicine hall. In addition, there are outbuildings including the West Wing, the East Wing, the Comprehensive Building, and the Living Building.

New Daxiong Treasure Hall

White Dragon Zen Temple for more detailed description, please see the fourth travelogue, please pay attention to check, thank you!

4.2 Solitaire Zen Temple

There is also a Solitaire Zen Temple at the western foot of Hangwu Mountain. Originally an temple, Solitaire Temple is said to have a history of more than 800 years. In 1997, it was moved to the shengjiawu reservoir about 1000 meters away from the original site. In 1998, it was renamed "Solitaire Temple". Solitaire Zen Temple sits on the east and faces west, and the temple is built in the imitation Qing style. The main facilities of the temple are the Daxiong Treasure Hall, the Heavenly King Hall, the Yuantong Treasure Hall, the Medicine Master Hall, the Jizo Hall, and the Three Holy Temples.

There are many tourists going to the White Dragon Zen Temple, and the tourists who go to the Solitaire Zen Temple are basically invisible, perhaps because the White Dragon Zen Temple is more famous, and it is convenient to climb the top of the mountain and overlook the distance? However, I do think that solitaire Zen Temple embodies the charm of "deep mountain Tibetan ancient temple" very well, highlighting the good situation of quiet in the middle of the bustle, and is really an ideal place for practitioners.

In addition, kekk-ji temple and Jizo Zen-ji temple, which were not visited this time, hope to go to make up for the shortcomings after the temple is opened normally after the epidemic is over.

05 Conclusion

The overall feeling of this visit to Hangwu Mountain is that although Hangwu Mountain is not high, it will still feel majestic because it stands on the plain. The forest on the mountain is deep and refreshing, the scenery is charming, the cultural heritage is profound, the White Dragon Temple is full of incense, and there are many tourists. It can be said that Hangwu Mountain is a free famous mountain that is very worth visiting.

There are two regrets to say: First, there are four pavilions on the way up the mountain that have not been named, which is really a pity, and I hope that the Guali Town Government and Dong'en Village can widely collect pavilion names to make up for the cultural deficiencies. Second, the mountain mass that was dug up in the early years of Hangwu Mountain hopes to be completely green as soon as possible, and the cemeteries everywhere should be planted with trees such as pines and cypresses to cover it.

Finally, the code word is not easy, please like and pay attention to it, share the forward, thank you!
