Xitai Jishang Annihilation Battle - The former deputy commander of the Sixteenth Army recalls the Battle of the Giant Goldfish in Southwest Lu

author:Jiang Jiro

"Attacking the enemy must be saved, destroying its saviors; attacking the enemy must retreat, eliminating its retreaters" is an important principle of Commander Liu Bocheng's art of command.

In the winter of 1946, the Kuomintang concentrated its superior forces and launched a continuous attack on the Liberated Area of Luyu in Jinji and Hebei.

In late December, the enemy Zhengzhou Sui bureau gathered wang jingjiu and Wang Zhonglian, a total of ten brigades of 60,000 people, and marched north side by side from the Huaxian and Anyang areas of Henan, in an attempt to find the main force of our field army for a decisive battle and realize its arrogant plan of opening up the Pinghan Road.

In the absence of a chance for the enemy to concentrate and annihilate, the main force of our army inserted itself into the areas of giant (deer), jin (township), and fish (Taiwan) where the enemy's rear troops were weak, and suddenly launched an attack, which was the giant goldfish campaign.

By January 1, 1947, juye was conquered, Jiaxiang was liberated, and more than 4,000 enemy troops were annihilated. Then he turned his troops to besiege the 21st Brigade of the Enemy's 88th Division in Jinxiang. The enemy was from Chiang Kai-shek's concubine lineage, and after being attacked, he cried out for help.

The enemy Xuzhou Sui Bureau was busy ordering Fang Xianjue, commander of the Eighty-eighth Division, to personally lead his Sixty-second Brigade and the 14O Brigade of the Seventy Division, which had just been transferred from Taiwan, to aid Jinxiang from Xuzhou to the north of Jingfeng County; the Zhengzhou Sui Bureau also ordered Zhang Lanfeng, commander of the Fourth Column of Henan Security, a temporary commander of Dingtaozhi, and Liu Ruzhen, commander of the Sixty-eighth Division of Heze, to lead reinforcements to Jinxiang.

Chiefs Liu and Deng immediately made up their minds to attack the city and provide reinforcements, and continued to actively attack the enemy in Jinxiang with one force, and the enemy forces of Zhang and Liu were suppressed, and the main force of the field army destroyed more than 9,000 people of Fang Xianjue's troops in one fell swoop in the area between Jinxiang and Yutai on the tenth day.

On the thirteenth day, he annihilated most of the enemy Zhang Lanfeng's troops near Baifutu in the southwest of Jinxiang and captured Zhang Lanfeng alive.

During this period, our first column was ordered to return from the Jin-Cha-Ji Military Region to the Jin-Ji Luyu Military Region. There were only two brigades in the whole column, commander Yang Dezhi, deputy commander Zeng Siyu, and chief of staff Lu Shaowu, all of whom were transferred to the Jin-Cha-Ji Military Region, and only Su Zhenhua was in charge.

After a long march of more than a thousand miles, the troops arrived in the vicinity of Yanggu in Shandong from Quyang in Hebei Province, and after only two days of rest, Commanders Liu and Deng ordered us to immediately rush to the red boat mouth between Juancheng and Yuncheng, and prepare to join the second column to intercept the seventy-fifth division of the Wang Jingjiu group that had returned from Puyang to Aid Southwest Lu via Dongkou and Heze.

On January 10, 1947, on our way south, we learned that the enemy's 75th Division had changed from Jixian to Take a train from Jixian To Longhai Road to the east.

The commander of the field army ordered our column and the second column to rush south, and together with the seventh column, annihilated Liu Ruzhen's troops near Nanluji.

When we reached the northwest of Wenshangji and the vicinity of Yanglou at the speed of forced marching, the enemy had already passed through Nanluji to the east. I followed quickly to the east.

On the fourteenth day, after Liu Ruzhen entered the Shilou in the southeast of Nanluji, he learned the news that Zhang Lanfeng's troops had been annihilated, so he immediately led his troops to the west and fled to the area near Gu'anji via Baofengji.

Our column turned westward and pursued it lightly with the 2nd Brigade, and at noon on the fifteenth day, we pursued Gu'an Ji, and the enemy had fled in the direction of Xitai ji, east of Dingtao.

Liu Ruzhen saw that the situation was not good, lest he end up with Zhang Lanfeng, he threw down his troops and ran to Heze.

While our Second Brigade was tracking and pursuing the fleeing enemy, the Seventh Column Cavalry Regiment quickly inserted itself from the left flank to Luozhuangzhai and Luowuzhuang on the southwest side of Xitaiji, blocking the enemy back to Xitaiji.

In the afternoon of the same day, the main force of the column arrived and surrounded the 220 O Regiment of the Enemy's Seventy-fourth Brigade, the 243Rd Regiment of the 81st Brigade, and the 543rd Regiment of the 181st Brigade.

The commander of the column immediately led the brigade commander and the chief of the operations section to the Qianniu Tower in the northeast corner of xitaiji to reconnoiter the enemy's situation and terrain, and determined the deployment of troops and the method of fighting at the spot.

There are only 100 households in Xitaiji, surrounded by outer trenches and two meters high and more than one meter thick earthen wall. After the enemy retreated to the village, he immediately used the wall and the outer trench to build fortifications in an attempt to hold on to the reinforcements.

Our attacking forces, in accordance with the uniform deployment of the columns, approached the enemy at dusk, and after a short period of preparation, at twenty-one o'clock they launched simultaneous attacks from three directions.

Due to the open terrain in the direction of the Seventh Regiment, the assault detachment was blocked by the fierce fire of the enemy during the impact, and the casualties were too large to break through.

The assault battalion of the Eighth Regiment burst to the edge of the village, was counter-attacked by the enemy's superior forces, and after twenty minutes of fierce fighting, the battalion commander Comrade Li Wanyuan was sacrificed, the second echelon did not keep up, and the attack did not work.

The four regiments in the main direction of attack, the first echelon launched two battalions side by side assault, the three battalions attacked from the east village mouth, and when they approached the outer trench, they were stopped by oblique fire from the enemy fire point on the wall, and the battalion commander Wu Zhiyou was shot and wounded. He did not care to bandage the wound, endured severe pain, and commanded light and heavy machine guns to concentrate fire to suppress the enemy's fire point.

At this time, Liang Tingzuo, the commander of the second battalion, led the assault company of the battalion to quickly break through the siege from the northeast corner of the village and captured two courtyards in succession.

Relying on its superiority in strength and firepower, the enemy's 543rd Regiment desperately launched a continuous counterattack on the Second Battalion, and blocked the breakthrough with firepower in a vain attempt to wipe out the Assault Company of the Second Battalion while its foothold was unstable.

The comrades of the Sixth Company heard the demands made by the leader of the column before the war: "We must be able to enter and hold." ”

Carrying forward the spirit of lonely combat, they used bayonets and grenades to repel the enemy's crazy counterattack again and again, and consolidated the breakthrough with the support of the column's artillery fire.

Then, the main force of the three battalions and the first battalion entered the village from the opening opened by the second battalion and engaged in a fierce street battle with the enemy.

The twelve companies of the three battalions entered the village from the mouth of the east village, expanded the results along the wall, and were blocked by the superior strength of the enemy's 22 O regiment.

The third platoon was frustrated from the frontal attack, and Comrade Zheng Facheng, the commander of the fourth squad and the hero of the first class, led the whole squad to take advantage of the weakness of the enemy's chaotic structure and inconsistent command, pretended to be the enemy, cleverly and bravely broke through several blockades and checkpoints in a row, inserted themselves into the Dongzhai Gate to defend the enemy's flank, and at once destroyed the enemy's four fire points and a company compound near the Zhai Gate, and met the main force of the battalion in victory.

The enemy, believing himself to be well-armed and well-armed, was determined not to let us stand still, and his arrogance in counterattacking was very arrogant.

In order to consolidate the position and expand the achievements of the battle, the brigade commander Yin Xianbing and the deputy brigade commander Zheng Unification took several comrades of our organ into the village and set up a front finger in an independent house.

When the soldiers heard that the brigade commander had taken command of the front line, they multiplied their courage and engaged in a more fierce battle with the counterattacking enemy.

In the repeated battles with the enemy, at midnight, some of the enemy troops burst in front of our brigade command post, and the situation was extremely critical.

Comrade Zhu Dunfa, a reconnaissance staff officer, stepped forward and led the guards, scouts, and messengers around him to rush into the enemy group and pack up dozens of enemies.

Relying only on five courtyards, the four regiments fought until the early morning of the next day, repelled more than a dozen counter-attacks of the enemy, inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, and gradually increased the number of wounded in their own positions.

Brigadier Yin Xianbing took advantage of the gap between the enemy's counterattacks to inspect several courtyards controlled by our side, and after returning to the command post, he casually asked the guard Xiao Li to bring a playing card to compete with the deputy brigade commander.

Puzzled, I asked, "Chief, do you still have the heart to play this?"

Brigadier Yin said, "Where do we have this leisure!" This is nothing more than a pretense. ”

Deputy Brigade Commander Zheng Unification took over the conversation and said: "When the troops are in unfavorable and difficult situations, the commanders need to be calm and self-assured, which can enhance the confidence and courage of the soldiers to overcome difficulties and defeat the enemy." We play poker as 'drunkards don't mean to drink', you know?"

In the small hut, there was a burst of hearty laughter.

Before the commanders had finished playing a handful of cards, Brigadier Yin stopped thoughtfully, he closed the cards in his hand, turned his face and said to me: "Old Gao, Commissar Dai is alone outside the village, and he needs people around him, you immediately feel out of the village, tell Commissar Dai about the situation, and quickly transfer the Eighth Regiment into the village to give the enemy some color." ”

Time was pressing, and without hesitation, I carried the "Twenty Rings" and, with the flash of shells and grenade explosions, under the cover of fire, reached Wangzhuang, where the brigade headquarters was located.

I briefly reported the battle situation and the brigade commander's intentions to Commissar Dai Runsheng, and Commissar Dai told me to go to the Eighth Regiment immediately to convey the order.

After receiving the order, the regimental commander and political commissar of the Eighth Regiment immediately led the troops from the north to the direction of the attack of the Four Regiments, and under the cover of fire, all entered the village before dawn.

After the Eighth Regiment entered the village, it immediately added fortifications and actively expanded the results of the battle. After dawn, the enemy concentrated his forces to continuously counterattack us and blocked the breakthrough with intensive firepower, in a vain attempt to cut off the connection between inside and outside our village and eliminate or expel our troops from the village.

While the fighting was raging, the only telephone line leading outside the village was broken, and contact with the column was lost. The telephone operators sent out twice to check the line were sacrificed.

Taking advantage of the sudden interruption of our support fire, the enemy pounced on our position like a hungry wolf. What is even more insidious is that when they carried out the counter-attack, they drove the masses of the people, walked in front with torches in hand, and burned the grass huts and huts that I was guarding.

In this emergency situation, while organizing the troops to carry out close operations and digging trenches outside the village to communicate with each other, we adopted the tactical means of attacking and defending to attack the flanks of the counter-attacking enemy.

Brigadier Yin Xianbing personally visited the Fourth Regiment, commanded the troops to repulse the enemy, and covered the safe retreat of the masses to our side. Although the enemy has exhausted all his strength, he is not dead-hearted. The fierce battle between the enemy and us, house by house, continued.

After a night of fierce fighting, the attrition of our troops could not be replenished by the enemy's blockade, and the situation became more and more difficult, and the brigade commander was anxious not to contact the outside of the village.

Comrade Xing Junjie, commander of the communications unit, snatched the tools and equipment for checking the line from the telephone operator, and ran out of the brigade command post like a gust of wind; he risked his life and tactfully and boldly continuously broke through the enemy's fire blockade area, found several places on the line that had been blown up, and quickly and skillfully picked up the line.

When the last place was received, there was not enough thread on hand. At this time, he deeply understood that in this urgent moment, communicating and communicating one minute earlier would give him a better chance of victory. Therefore, he resolutely stretched out his arms and dragged the two threads with his hands, allowing the current to pass through his body, connecting the lines, and ensuring the combat command.

At about ten o'clock in the morning, the enemy once again launched a multi-road large-scale counter-attack on me, and the soldiers engaged in a white-knife battle with the enemy, and by noon, the enemy's counterattack was crushed by us.

The enemy suffered successive defeats, suffered heavy casualties, had no hope of waiting for help, had lost the confidence to hold firm, and tried to find an opportunity to break through in the midst of shaking and panic.

The commander of the column decisively transferred the seven regiments of the first brigade from the southwest corner of the village to the north of the village, and in coordination with the second brigade, took advantage of the situation to attack the enemy, and the main force of the first brigade advanced to the southwest of the village, preparing to annihilate the enemy who broke through.

At about three o'clock in the afternoon, the main force of the Second Brigade began to launch a fierce attack on the enemy from the village.

At six o'clock, the enemy troops divided into multiple routes and broke through to the southwest. Brigadier Yang ordered the regiments to immediately attack in the direction of Guanmazhuang to intercept and annihilate the fleeing enemy.

The troops of the Second Brigade closely followed the enemy in pursuit, and in coordination with our column to annihilate the enemy's main forces of the Seventh Column, the Nineteenth Brigade and the Second Column, they also attacked the enemy from the southeast and northwest of Xitai, respectively, to the enemy who broke through.

The Seven Column Cavalry Regiment swung its sword on its prancing horse and first blocked the fleeing enemy head-on. All our troops arrived one after another, and when the enemy was confused, they cooperated to annihilate them all in the open field southwest of Xitaiji.

At the same time, a regiment that Zhang Lanfeng's troops had run away from Baifutu was destroyed by the main force of the three columns. At this point, our army completely eliminated more than 6,000 people from liu ruzhen's troops on the last road of the enemy's second road reinforcements.

According to the deployment of Liu and Deng, a total of more than 16,000 enemy troops were annihilated in twenty-five days, and the Giant Goldfish Campaign was successfully concluded.

After the war, Commander Liu Bocheng, political commissar of Deng Xiaoping, and General Order commended all the commanders and fighters of our column.

The commendation order pointed out: "After marching in the middle of the month, the first column only rested for two days, that is, it joined the battle with a four-day rapid march, and in the Dingdong Campaign, it took on an independent main offensive task, achieving the goal of annihilating three regiments (owed to one battalion) of the enemy Liu Ruzhen. The column's strong mobility and tenacious assault spirit deserve the praise of the whole army, and its forced forced force ability can be studied in particular. ”
