Kyo machiko (京町子, Kyo Machiko) (March 25, 1924 – May 12, 2019), real name Motoko Yano, was a Japanese actress born in Osaka. Kyomachi is a traditional Japanese singer and dancer who has also appeared in numerous films, TELEVISION series, and stage plays.
Kyo-machiko lost her father when she was 5 years old and was raised by her mother and grandmother. Although she had rumors of a relationship with Masaichi Nagata, the president of Daiei Film Company, she is still single.
Kyomachi joined the Osaka Shochiku Opera Company as an actress in 1942, and in 1949 joined daiei Film Company to start filmmaking, becoming the signature of Ōei Pictures along with Fumiko Wakao and Fujiko Yamamoto. Kyomachiko became an international star in 1950 as the female lead in Akira Kurosawa's famous work Rashomon.
Kyo Machiko starred as the lead actress in the 1956 Japanese-American co-production film Akizuki TeaHouse, co-starring Marlon Brando and Glenn Ford, and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy/Music Category.
Kyo-machiko was involved in the filming of several major films from the 1960s to the 1970s, and after the bankruptcy of Dai-in 1971, she mainly starred in TV series and stage plays. Kyo Machiko was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal by the Japanese government in 1987.
At the age of eighty, Kyo Machiko is still participating in traditional Japanese operas, starring in "Women's Loyal Shōzō" in 2006. Kyomachiko has acted in more than ninety films so far.
