Most of us are fortunate not to have experienced the horrors of war. However, a great movie can help us understand the realities of soldiers' lives. Sadly, many war films tend to over-exaggerate the action and drama to make it more appealing to audiences. The good news is that this is not always the case. Let's take a look at the war film, which shows us the reality of this tragic era!
Saving Second Class Ryan (1998)
From the costumes to the military tactics used, almost all of the rescuers of the second class were at the heart of the matter. In the first act, we see a storm at Omaha Beach. In fact, it was so accurate that Veterinarians of World War II had to be escorted out of the cinema after watching the film. However, we have to admit that there are inaccuracies in the plot. For example, the character played by Tom Hanks simply doesn't exist. Nor did the conspiracy centered on saving the mother's son. Even so, it's impressive to see how many facts are right.
Letter from Iwo Jima (2006)
This war film is refreshing because it doesn't mimic the story of An American soldier like most American soldiers do. Produced and directed by Clint Eastwood, it is considered the accompaniment to another of his films, our father's banner. The old film revolves around the same battles, though it's told from the point of view of an American soldier. Iwo Jima wrote to him and went to great lengths to show us how fearless the Japanese soldiers were in one of the biggest battles of World War II. It is based on a book written by a Japanese general and even quotes his famous quotes.
Glory (1989)
We learn the story of a white soldier named Robert Gould Shaw. He was appointed commander of the Second All Black Alliance Regiment of the Civil War. They used the letter he had written that year as the basis for the script. It was a great choice because it accurately represented the racial dynamics of that era and did not hinder the display of the reality of war. Many scenes show how brutal the battle was, and how going to a field hospital led to death.
All-metal jacket (1987)
Stanley Kubrick fulfilled his mission, and during the Vietnam War, he made a film that followed the Marines. He wanted to do it as accurately as possible. Filmmakers started doing research four years ago. He watched old footage, read Vietnamese newspapers, and studied "hundreds of photos." That's his 1987 masterpiece, an all-metal jacket. The action scenes and costumes are accurate, but its advantage is the experience of an actor. R. Lee Ermey, a former Vietnam War training instructor, was supposed to serve as a technical adviser, but after trying to take on the role, he was offered the position of Gun Sergeant Hartman.
We Are Soldiers (2002)
We saw a three-day conflict in the Vietnam War called the Battle of Idran. The film shows military tactics, such as firing a few rounds of ammunition at the bushes and crushing the enemy. According to the director, the film is based on a book written by a former U.S. Army general, Halmore. Apparently, the retired general complained: "Hollywood movies are all wrong. "That makes director Randall Wallace work hard to get things right! Finally, Moore said, it was quite close.
Black Hawk Down (2001)
Based on a non-fiction book, Black Hawk Down is about a journalist in Somalia during the Battle of Mogadishu. Although many Hollywood war films stylized these projects, it chose a gritty, streamlined style. Impressively, the film shows the helicopter crash and the tactics used by American soldiers when forced to suffer heavy artillery fire. Although the film is reluctant to dig deeper into the story and politics, it still skilfully pays tribute to all the soldiers who fought in this important battle.
Stalingrad (1993)
We first wanted to figure out that there were two movies of the same name. We want you to focus not on the Russian propaganda film of 2013, but on the German film of 1993, which was jokingly called "one of the most accurate war films of all time." It shows the perspective of a soldier whose mission failed to invade this veritable Soviet city. The film didn't stop the soldiers who showed the bodies and chaos of the violent scenes. Many also praised Germany for showing a losing side in the battle.
Lone Survivor (2013)
Lone Survivor is also based on a book of the same name. If you watch this movie, you'll know the story of four SEALs stationed in Afghanistan. After the Taliban attack, the SEALs had to go through a life-and-death situation. Although it may seem dramatic, you should remember that everything in the movie happens. They really had to go off a cliff to get out of the gunfire, and McMurphy gave up his life. Even that part of the friendly villagers helping Marcus Lutrell is true!
Hamburg Hills (1987)
There's a reason Hamburg Hills doesn't get much attention. It came out in rows just nine months yes, was an all-metal jacket, and was released a month later. Although it didn't get much media attention, it accurately reflected the daily life of an ordinary war platoon. The film doesn't put it in a larger framework, but simply shows us what everyday life looks like. They were able to refine "Gollum's Slang" to the point that they needed to add subtitles. One historian also said that the battle scenes were "as close as possible to your requirements."
Marsh (1979)
Although the 1970 film is considered a black comedy revolving around the horrors and trials of war, it remains one of the world's greatest war works. This culturally significant project was built on the basis of a medical team in South Korea, though its subtext was more critical of the Vietnam War than anything else. It's understandable that it will have certain inaccuracies, but it's largely accurate to the units of everyday antics and rituals to avoid losing their minds. This is just to show that a film doesn't need to dramatically maintain true historical facts.
Look (1985)
A look at Soviet cinema is about the atrocities committed by the Nazis during their occupation of Belarus during World War II. It revolves around a young boy who grew up in occupied Belarus and sees Nazi soldiers throwing grenades at home for kicks and similar war crimes. The film's climax is hard to watch because the Nazis burned down entire villages and killed almost all of the inhabitants there. Those who doubt the accuracy of the film will be able to find terrible records of the same things committed by the Nazis in Belarus.
Sergeant York (1941)
This must have been one of the first films on our list. Sergeant York appeared in 1941 to show the life of a World War I soldier named Evan York. He killed 25 German soldiers and captured 132 soldiers, making him one of the most glorious soldiers in the conflict. What helped keep the film's story true was that York was a consultant on set. This project showcased the reality of war and became the highest grossing film of the year. The film also helped boost american morale, as the country joined World War II around the same time.
The Boat(1981年)
We have another German film that does not shy away from describing the horrors of war. The story takes place in 1942 and is about a German U-Boat crew during the Battle of the Atlantic. One admired its subtle view of life inside the submarine and showed the struggle of German soldiers to understand what the Nazi Party was doing. Considered one of the best films about a U.S. Navy soldier, DAS Boot shows us a vague and realistic portrayal of people who have lived through war.
Tora (1970)
Japanese and American filmmakers collaborated on a biopic called "War Films." More than thirty years since the Pearl Harbor bombings of Tora Tora. It shows both angles of the attack and uses the history set whenever possible. The filmmakers filmed footage of American destroyers and recreated the exact same aircraft used by Japanese soldiers. Although it didn't get the best critical reviews, it's undeniable that it was one of the most accurate films about World War II. In fact, it is often the main course in history class!
Gates' Enemy (2001)
This is another description of the Battle of Stalingrad. However, the 2001 film showed the perspective of a Soviet soldier. The enemy on the gate is a good demonstration of the conditions experienced by residents and soldiers in the winter of 1942-1943. It also shows us the perspectives of the female soldiers and residents who helped the SOVIETS succeed. Although the film is based on a non-fiction book, there is also a lot of artistic freedom, such as a love story.
Masters and Commanders: The Other Side of the World (2003)
Built in 1805, the captain and commander is considered the pinnacle of the Napoleonic Wars. It was a true friendship between a medical surgeon and a British Royal Navy captain. The film crew relied on a novel as a reference, but that didn't stop them from relying on historical facts. While it feels slow-paced, it does a lot of work in showing what naval warfare in the 19th century was like. In addition to this, it depicts for us the outdated medical habits of the time, as well as the isolation and daily life on board.
Valor (2012)
Even if the heroic act has a completely fictional script, the action and material are actually very accurate. The story is about a group of SEALs trying to rescue a CIA agent. When the filmmakers found out they couldn't find the right actors to play the roles, they sent an active Navy SEALs to bring the story to life. Unfortunately, this accuracy ended up being detrimental to the film. They don't use real actors so their performances are inferior at best. What's more, one film critic said the film was considered a "hybrid of documentary and fiction."
"The Great Escape" (1963)
Who would have thought that one of Hollywood's most famous war films would also be one of the most accurate? Although its historical accuracy has not been particularly praised, the Victorious Great Escape remains faithful to its character and period. In fact, many of the characters are based on real people! The team also filmed scenes in Germany and used a tunnel built to escape. Still, the film depicts a more American perspective, whereas in reality it was largely orchestrated by Canadian and British personnel. The three fugitives were also Dutch and Norwegian.
Dawn of Rescue (2006)
Did you know that the 2006 film was adapted from a documentary? If you haven't seen it yet, the film tells the story of Diter Dengler, a German-American pilot captured during the Vietnam War. He was captured, imprisoned, tortured, and finally escaped. Many praised Rescue Dawn for the effort it took to show off the daily struggles in the camp. They did change some details, though, such as his accent and the number of prisoners held hostage. More importantly, it underestimated the worst torture Dengele had suffered, most likely to preserve PG-13.
U-571(2000)
U-571 has formed troupes with actors like Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bon Jovi and Harvey Keitel. It was to show the brave American soldiers who retrieved a puzzle coding device from a German submarine during World War II. Despite their success in doing so, the truth is that the HMS Bulldog from England accomplished the feat a few months before the United States entered the war. The film received a great deal of criticism for this because it felt it underestimated the efforts of other allies during the war.
Jarhead(2005)
Jack Gyllenhaal in Jaheid. The film received much praise for depicting the psychological difficulties experienced by U.S. troops in the first Gulf War. Still, former Marines criticized the film. One of them explained that mental and physical abuse was "rare and out of context." The film eventually caused controversy, so much so that the U.S. Marine Corps Office of Public Affairs had to issue a statement. It said its description of the soldier was "inaccurate" and a "reasonable explanation of military life."
Pearl Harbor (2001)
We don't even know where to start at Pearl Harbor. The story is about one of the most horrific terrorist attacks on the United States, but it strays too far from reality. First, it feels like the love story is the focal point and the attack is just a conspiracy device. The plot of the film is inaccurate, but director Michael Bay also effortlessly uses modern ships to camouflage them and make them look more accurate. Considering who planned the film, the explosions were more numerous than necessary. Actors include Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin and Jon Voyt, but even they can't save the film.
The Wind Whisperer (2002)
Even though The Hyacinth Man could have been a great movie, it didn't jump at that chance. It was one of the first films to talk about how important the Navajo code speaker was during World War II. They helped the secrets of the United States not fall into the hands of the enemy. Sadly, the film is based on Nicholas Cage's best efforts to protect a Navajo code speaker, and is full of inaccuracies. The late film critic Roger Ebert criticized the film for taking the Navajo people aside, using "battlefield clichés" instead of using more believable lines of dialogue.
"Bomb Disposal Unit" (2008)
When it comes to Catherine Bigelow's film, people have mixed feelings. The bomb disposal machine followed an explosive ordnance disposal team during the Iraq War. Some critics say it's a clever movie that shows men who really enjoy the fun of war. At the same time, there are also some veterinarians who say the film is ridiculous in the process of describing the mission. The film came under fire for making explosives handlers look like "adrenaline addicts without self-discipline." Although it may not be the most accurate film, it is still considered one of the greatest war films of all time.
Dunkirk (2017)
When Dunkelk received many praises and accolades, it did not have a particularly important impact on historical facts. Sadly, director Chris Nolan failed to shy away from many questions. Kenneth Branagh's role has been criticized for feeling like an integrated character. It is hard to believe that he could only rest on the edge of the ship to lead the evacuation. Beyond that, the film doesn't show the importance of African, Indian, and French soldiers.
Inchon (1982)
The film is considered a key point in the Korean War and is considered the Battle of Incheon. With a budget of $30 million, people have high hopes that it will be a great movie.
