In addition, on the 12th, the railway between Athens and Thessaloniki was suspended. In the afternoon, the northeast of the Attica Peninsula, where Athens is located, received heavy snowfall, and lamia, a transportation hub 210 kilometers north of Athens, had suffered extensive snowfall for the previous 8 hours, coupled with the impact of low temperature frost, the railway tracks were damaged in many places and had to be urgently repaired.
This round of extreme weather began to invade Greece from north to south from the 10th, and is expected to end in the early morning of the 14th local time. Greek households have been under intense pressure from rising electricity and fuel prices in recent times, and this multi-day round of extreme weather has increased their spending on heating.
