Should the corn "yakuza" be broken? Don't argue anymore, the big horn mouth period to break off the pros and cons

Some farmers asked, "When planting corn, do you want to break off the "branches" that are tillered?" ”

Due to the existence of climatic differences, as far as spring maize cultivation is concerned, the current maize in some areas is in the growth period of the big horn mouth (generally 13-14 leaf spreading), and in some areas the corn is in the small horn mouth stage (9-10 leaf spread).

Regardless of the seedling stage or the trumpet mouth stage, during this period, the axillary buds at the base of the corn plant are prone to grow multiple side branches, the scientific name is "tiller", and the folk call it "branch", "Yazi" and so on. Originally, this was a "normal" phenomenon, and to some extent, tillering is an inevitable physiological process for the growth and development of corn plants. Because maize belongs to the grass family, tillering is its inherent universal characteristic, when the top advantage of the plant is weakened (such as excessive control of prosperity, excessive nutrients, high temperature and drought at the seedling stage, downy mildew disease infestation, etc.), the basal axillary buds will grow tillers.

When passing by Uncle Zhang's cornfield, I saw that he was busy weeding, perhaps because of the meticulous management, his family's corn plants grew really well, but also found that there was a large range of plants growing branches.

"Uncle Zhang, your corn grows so well, you see even tillers are coming out," he said with a smile.

"What is tillering?" You're talking about corn sticks! The sticks are a good thing, and if the field is well managed, it can also produce buds and rice sticks! Hearing Uncle Zhang's words, I was really surprised, and I didn't expect that the famous planting experts in the village would actually keep the corn tillers.

In fact, there are many old farmers like Uncle Zhang who insist that the tillers of corn need to be retained, the main reason is that the tillers of corn have limited nutrients, have little impact on yields, and the tillers may hurt the main stem and be laborious.

Therefore, the folk debate about whether corn tillers should be broken or not has never stopped.

The reason for not recommending breaking it is consistent with the views of people like Uncle Zhang, whose crowd is mainly reflected in the older generation of farmers.

The suggestion to break it is just the opposite of their point of view, that is, in the case of limited growth space and soil nutrients, if they do not break it in time, and let the tillers continue to grow, on the one hand, they will compete with the main stem for nutrients and growth space, and it is easy to increase the probability of being infected by diseases and insects, on the other hand, these tillers are difficult to form corn cobs. In such a case, where is the need to preserve maize tillers? Is it just to save time and effort?

In my personal opinion, I prefer to break off tillers, that is, corn tillers are very necessary, although the work is really time-consuming and laborious.

In order to better persuade old farmers like Uncle Zhang to change the outdated planting concept and break off the tillers in time. Last year, I deliberately did a controlled test, that is, 100 corn plants of the same quality (a certain Dan 1331), similar growth, and tillering were selected, of which 50 were timely broken off tillers at the big horn mouth (test group), and the remaining 50 were retained tillers (control group). In the case of the same management of subsequent topdressing, watering, pest control, etc., it is found that after the maize matures, the gap between the two operations is more obvious.

The results of the control group showed that the length of a corn cob was 21-23 cm, the number of rows was 25-26, the number of particles was 500-600, and most of the corn cobs had the phenomenon of "bald tip".

The results of the experimental group showed that the length of a corn cob was 23-24 cm, the number of rows was stable at 26 rows, the number of particles was 600-650, and most of the corn cobs were "capped with one grain".

Judging from the test results, the number of corn cobs produced by the corn plants that break off the tillers in time at the big horn mouth stage has 50-100 more grains of a corn cob than that of the tillers; and the difference in the length, number of rows, particles, etc. of the corn cobs produced by the tillers is smaller, which indicates that the overall quality of the corn cob is more stable.

Therefore, individuals prefer to break off the tillers of corn in time.

Of course, it is not that all stages of tillering must be broken, whether it is necessary to break it, mainly depends on whether tillering has an adverse impact on the growth of the main stem. If tillers appear before the seedling stage or the large trumpet mouth stage (including the large trumpet mouth stage), it is recommended to break it in time at the large horn mouth stage. Because the big horn mouth stage is one of the most vigorous periods for maize plants to need water and fertilizer, under the objective conditions of limited fertilizer water nutrients and growth space, timely breaking off tillers helps to ensure that the main stem grows well. At the same time, as long as the operation method is proper, the damage to the main stem can be avoided.

If tillers appear at the base of the plant after the formation of the corn cob, it is theoretically possible not to break it, because the tillering at this stage has little impact on the development of the corn cob.
