Qi Yukun: Miscellaneous memories of the past

A few days ago, I saw Liu Jingxi's sister's article recalling Zhang Jinchi, and yesterday I saw Li Hanqiu's "Response to Liu Jingxi's "Trivial Remembrance"".

Qi Yukun: Miscellaneous memories of the past

Professor Liu Jingxi and Mr. and Mrs. Zhang Jinchi

In the 1950s and 1960s, there was a popular saying on the campus of Peking University: "Gold shines everywhere it goes." Liu Jingxi and Zhang Jinchi fulfilled this sentence, and they shone like gold on the black land of the northern frontier.

Although I was a classmate of the upper and lower grades, I did not know each other in school, and we met at academic conferences after the reform and opening up, but at first sight, we trusted each other and supported each other, not only did we become close friends, but also closely linked the two small research teams of ancient novels in Harbin in the northern Xinjiang of the motherland and Fuzhou in the south.

Jingji, Jinchi and I often exchange ideas at academic conferences, although the distance is far, but every few years we have to visit each other, get together, reminisce about the past, talk about scholarship, push the heart, and have endless fun. We gather a lot and can't go into detail.

Our gathering in Hainan is very memorable, and it is also the last time we and Jinchi will meet. It was February 2017, and I was traveling to Sanya with my insiders, and it happened that Xiao Xiangkai and his wife, Jing Ji's sister, and Jinchi were all in Hainan.

On February 8th, Xiao Xiangkai and I set off from Sanya high-speed rail station to Lingshui to visit Jingji's sister, after lunch, from Lingshui to Qionghai to visit Zhang Jinchi, in the afternoon walk in Wanquan Riverside Park, take a group photo, the following picture is our last group photo with Jinchi and his wife, which is precious.

Han Qiu attached a frame of the article jokingly called "Wumen Si Barnyard Officials". Indeed, Mr. "Da Wu" (Wu Zuyi) and "Xiao Wu" (Wu Xiaoru) have a great influence on us, especially Mr. Wu Zuyi's academic thoughts and research methods for studying ancient novels have a far-reaching influence on us.

Mr. Wu greatly appreciated his graduate student Professor Zhao Qiping[1] the paper "On the Process of Writing a Book"[2], because Zhao Qiping had done extremely solid research on Cao Xueqin's family lineage, work editions, proofreading, etc., and on the basis of these works, studied the author's life, the influence of his thoughts on creation, and studied the evolution of the author's thinking and the improvement of art in the process from "life to creation", "from "Treasure Book of the Wind and Moon" to "Dream of the Red Chamber" and "from manuscript to print". Mr. Wu believes that only by studying the version in this way and doing the writer's life examination can it be meaningful.

Professor Zhao Qiping

This insight of his has a great influence on several scholars who graduated from Peking University and are mainly engaged in the study of ancient novels, and we all take this path. For example, Liu Jingxi's "Cao Cao's Character in jiajingben 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms]"[3], "Jiajing ben and Mao Ben school reading notes" [4], Zhang Jinchi's "Three Kingdoms Romance examination" and other four famous works "examination theory", are all examination and discussion, not staying on the "examination", but on the basis of "examination". Jinchi's research and exposition on the "Conquest of Liao" part of "Water Margin" is "pseudo-ink", and the examination of the evolution of the four images in "Journey to the West" have all inspired me a lot.

Nishikichi has made significant achievements in the field of ancient fiction research. His success was first and foremost because he made academic research a lifelong career, that is, in his old age, he suffered from severe Parkinson's disease, or as he said, "I can't, and I don't want to sit still, I can only struggle forward" [5] until the end of my life.

"Examination of The Four Classical Masterpieces of China", by Zhang Jinchi, People's Publishing House, October 2019.

Secondly, Jinchi first taught literary and art theory for a long time, laying a theoretical foundation. From the autumn of 1977 to the winter of 1979, he was seconded to the Institute of "Dream of the Red Chamber" of the China Academy of Arts to participate in the annotation of "Dream of the Red Chamber", which further improved his documentary ability. As Senior Cheng Yi summed up: "He has a relatively solid foundation in literary and art theory, and he has profound skills in the examination of literature and materials." ”[6]

Third, he writes very seriously. He told me that after the article is written, it must be put for three months, then take it out to see, and then revise it before it can be taken out for publication. His strong writing ability, coupled with an extra serious attitude, makes his "writing have the potential of the Yangtze River, and the magic of falling flowers and flowing water" [7].

Academic seminar to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Wu Zujian

Mr. Wu was the guide of Jinchi, guiding his undergraduate annual paper, which made him indissoluble with "Dream of the Red Chamber" throughout his life. Mr. Wu has always been concerned and guiding Jinchi's academic research, and when he wrote several "Journey to the West" papers, Mr. Wu praised his "Journey to the West" papers as better than the "Dream of the Red Chamber" papers, and encouraged him to stick to them.

Jinchi has a deep affection for His mentor Mr. Wu, and he has always been obsessed with completing the examination of the four classical masterpieces and living up to his expectations. In the "Afterword" of the "Examination of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms", he said: "I can finally take these four classical novel examinations to see mr. Wu Zujiao, The Teacher of Grace, and say: 'Sir, I have completed the examination of the four famous works, although the quality is not high, I have done my best. Not for nothing, not for it. ’”[8]
