Today, Volkswagen has finally achieved its plans for the revival of its iconic T1 model. The new ID.Buzz is based on the concept car launched at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, and after five years of modifications, it is finally launched in mass production, and is expected to be delivered in October, the first to land in the United States and Canada.
Although ID. Buzz is a commercial vehicle/MPV model, but its appearance is completely following the classic design of the Volkswagen T1, this legendary model born in 1950, it is rare to reproduce the car world as pure electricity after 72 years, and ID. The birth of Buzz also symbolizes Volkswagen's determination to enter the field of new energy, and moving the T1 ancestor out is not just a gimmick.
Old look, new physique
Appearance, ID. The overall silhouette of the Buzz is similar to that of the T7 Multivan, but with more streamlined designs, the front face adopts a T1-like circular arc design, led matrix headlights on both sides with through-LED daytime running lights, and a large logo is placed on the front face. In addition, the two-color design of the body is also a continuation of the T1 design.
Although the side part of the car is more square in design, the window gradually shrinks from the front row to the rear, forming a layered visual effect. The two-tone body is run by a waist line, and the rear side of the car continues the three horizontal strip decoration of the T1. In addition, the car is also equipped with an electric sliding door design, making it easier to get on and off the car.
In terms of size, ID. Buzz has a length, width and height of 4712mm X 1985mm X 1937mm, and a wheelbase of 2988mm, which is not small as an MPV.
In fact ID.Buzz in addition to the five-axis model, it will also plan to launch a seven-seat long-axis model in 2023; as for the ID. Buzz Cargo does not have a long shaft setting, in order to carry goods conveniently, the appearance is divided into single sliding doors, double sliding doors, but also can choose a closed body.
In terms of interior, ID.Buzz follows the ID. family design language, and the air outlet adopts a penetrating design, with wood grain trim panels and body color trim embellishments, making the interior more stylish; as for the Cargo version, it maximizes the use of space and makes the material simpler.
High-performance MPV is coming soon
The rest such as the steering wheel, 5.3-inch full LCD instrument and 12-inch suspension central control large screen are consistent with other models of the ID. family, but Volkswagen also said that through the launch of ID.Buzz, the entire host is upgraded to 3.0, so that users can get a smoother experience in terms of operation.
In terms of power, the ID.Buzz adopts the form of single-motor rear-wheel drive, and is equipped with a lithium battery pack of 77 kWh (total capacity 82 kWh), with a maximum motor output of 201bhp, a maximum torque of 310N·m, and a maximum speed of 145 km/h. However, the official has not yet given the data on the endurance, but according to the single-motor version of the ID. family, it is speculated that it is about 400km (WLTP).
Other high-performance versions such as the rear-wheel-drive single-motor setup with 168bhp/310Nm output and the more powerful dual-electric motor four-wheel drive GTX with 295bhp/460Nm output will be available in 2023. In the future, it is also planned to provide a standard wheelbase ID.Buzz with the same 52kWh batteries as the ID.3, ID 4 and ID.5, and a larger 111kWh battery will also be available for long-axle models.
It is worth mentioning that the ID. Built on the Volkswagen Group's MEB pure electric platform, buzz is equipped with a DCC (Adaptive Chassis Control) system based on the front McPherson and rear multi-link suspension, with active damping settings and a choice of up to three driving modes: Eco, Comfort and Sport. Since there is no front-mounted electric motor, its turning radius is only 11m, which is more than 1m lower than the multivan's turning radius.
Pure electric MPV benchmark
Although ID.Buzz did not use the model name of the T1 of that year, but used the same names as Cargo and Kombi to distinguish different models such as Caddy. Even so, the configuration it has as a pure electric household MPV can meet the needs of most people, and the harmless appearance of people and animals is more exciting for young people in the new era. Although until now, ID.Buzz has not been introduced into the country, the author believes that it will definitely enter the country, after all, the public will not let go of this piece of meat in front of them.
