Who is the most outstanding master of modern art knife? Wolfgang, a Canadian, must be among them! Wolfgang is one of his favorite knifemakers, and he is one of the very few artists in the world who does not use power tools to make knives. As early as 2005, I was fascinated by Wolfgang's work at first sight, and after more than ten years, I still maintain a strong love for his works. Wolfgang served as the president of the Canadian Knifesmiths Association, and is also one of the pillars of AKI for more than ten years, the biggest feature of his works is the creation and use of vivid lines and surfaces, it can be said that in the field of modern art knives, Wolfgang's achievements in applying organic line design to sword art design are the most outstanding.
Wolfgang knife making does not have any mysteries, the essence lies in his brain, he can always abstract the elements of nature into soft lines, and finally shape the shape of the knife; secondly, a pair of extremely skillful hands, holding the essence of the file technique, portraying a lot of shapes that are difficult to outline even CNC.
Wolfgang's most remarkable work was at its peak, a series of large-size straight knives made around 1990 and 2003, mostly short swords. Later, as I grew older, the fully handmade file knife was really inadequate, and Wolfgang began to invest more energy in making folding knives from 98. Folding knives are often much smaller than straight knives, and Wolfgang, as a master, is not step-by-step, but expands the territory. In the 1990s, the field of Western modern art swords and swords was full of talents, and the mainstream framework folding knives can be said to occupy half of the art folding knife market. Wolfgang's first folding knife WING, which caused a sensation as soon as it was born, not only had a very high appearance, but also refreshed the new form of artistic folding knife. Wing's handle is each flanked by a whole piece of thick stainless steel for pure hand machining, and finally reaches a complete curved relief form, which is not involved in previous folding knife works, it has structural integrity and strength, and also injects the concept of sculpture into the artistic folding knife with a new entry point.
After wing, Wolfgang continued to improve his folding knife, and another huge innovation was the use of 3D inlays. Most of the Wolfgang folding knife works seen today are made in this way. Prior to this, the inlay of the frame folding knife was flat, or decorated in a flat material groove. Wolfgang uses a variety of different materials, shapes each of them in advance, and then pieces them together within the open frame. This way of inlay design, now seems to be more common, now there are many knife makers continue to use the same way to design. There is no doubt that 3D inlays are more visually rich, and it is precisely because of Wolfgang's success that the traditional frame folding knife has opened up new avenues.
Having said a lot, cut to the point, today I would like to share with you a luxurious Wolfgang folding knife. The prototype of this one is called Lorelei, the name of the Rhine Banshee, Lorelei is personally considered to be the most outstanding Wolfgang folding knife style, of course, Lorelei has many variants, before and after estimated to have about ten, each Lorelei is actually different, just the appearance of the outline line is roughly the same. The length of Lorelais also generally varies from 18 cm to 20.5 cm, which is the best starting size for the art knife, which makes people feel that it is the ideal size to balance exquisite and exquisite.

It is well known that the shellfish is a very brittle natural material, and since one of the characteristics of Wolfgang's work is the high-sharp connection between the transitions of the material, the shellfish needs to polish the tip very sharply. Wolfgang also mentioned that this will be much more difficult than processing the same shape of stainless steel inlays, once the hand is not good, it is possible to scrap the material several times to succeed. Risks and opportunities coexist, and after molding, the shellfish highlights the jade-like texture, crystal clear, and looks like a cicada wing. The contrast between the smooth mother of pearl and the black surface of Damascus is wonderful.
The 3D inlay of the handle is very undulating, and one of Wolfgang's highlights can be clearly seen from the side, the steep three-dimensional change also takes into account the balance of the design essentials, and the hand feel is also perfect.
There is no single analytical standard for line pattern design, and this point of view in Wolfgang's works runs through the whole process, you look at the overall line from the front and back, or fold it up to see the part, you will always interpret different intentional characteristics, which is very intriguing. The best blend of wolfgang's works is nature, but unfortunately today the sky is not beautiful, the sun is not very bright, but among the flowers, the golden Wolfgang is still shining.
