The President of the University of Hong Kong, Cheung Cheung, was re-elected for an early 5-year term

Hong Kong, 3 Oct (Xinhua) -- The University Council of the University of Hong Kong issued a statement on the 3rd saying that after consultation with the Academic Affairs Committee, it was unanimously decided that the current president, Zhang Xiang, would remain in office for five years after the expiration of the appointment in July 2023.

In its statement, HKU's Council said that the continuity of the University's leadership is very important in view of the challenges and developments ahead, and it is confident that Zhang Xiang can continue to play his leadership role and lead HKU to a higher level.

The statement said that in the past three years, Zhang Xiang has shown the ability to cope with the crisis, and even though the COVID-19 pandemic has brought challenges to faculty and students, HKU has performed well in research and teaching. In addition, Cheung has promoted HKU's pioneering strategic projects, including the establishment of HKU's Shenzhen campus and the Global Recruitment programme for top professors, making HKU a world-class institution.

Xiang Zhang is an internationally renowned expert in nanoengineering, specializing in materials physics, metamaterials and nanophotons. Cheung became President of HKU in 2018 and succeeded Ma Feisen, who left office in January of the same year, for a five-year term, with the contract originally scheduled to expire in 2023.
