Single World of Drama: Qiu Shengrong's Three Modern Plays

This is the list of plays performed by the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe in July 1965 for the newly compiled modern drama "Letter from the South", starring Qiu Shengrong. After the 1964 Capital Peking Opera Modern Opera Observation and Performance Conference, the Peking Opera circle formed a climax in the performance of modern opera, and various troupes rushed to the front, and the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe was no exception, and after successfully creating and performing "Ludang Tinder" (later "Sha Jiabang"), it actively created and rehearsed several new plays. Qiu Shengrong is very active in his creation, brave in practice and innovation, during which time he created and starred in three modern plays: "Cuckoo Mountain" (old version), "Letter from the South" and "Snowflake Drifting". Qiu Shengrong played the protagonist Wudou in "Cuckoo Mountain", Zhao Yanxia played He Xiang, and Ma Lianliang played Zheng Laowan. The plot of "Cuckoo Mountain" starring Qiu Shengrong and the later model play "Cuckoo Mountain" are roughly the same, but the performance methods are very different, Wudou changed his name to Lei Gang, He Xiang changed his name to Ke Xiang, and the whole drama was dominated by Ke Xiang. The old version of "Rhododendron Mountain" is mainly based on black beans, and Qiu Shengrong created a series of singing voices, especially "The fire is raging...", which is a classic and is still being sung. Recently, the Beijing Opera House re-staged the play, re-presenting Qiu Shengrong's black beans on the stage. The title of the play was also changed to "Black Bean" to show that it was different from the model play "Cuckoo Mountain". It is also rare for the Beijing Opera House to put the old version of "Rhododendron Mountain" back on the stage. Its significance lies in clarifying a vague understanding that model opera is the originator of modern Peking Opera. The fact is that Peking Opera has been performing modern opera since the 1950s, and there are also many excellent repertoire, and the history of the development of Peking Opera cannot be separated. The second modern drama starring Qiu Shengrong is "Letter from the South", which tells the story of the South Vietnamese resistance forces fighting against the American invaders. Qiu Shengrong played Chen Laosi, Ma Lianliang played Yang Laoqing, and Li Shiji played Ah Xia. Qiu Shengrong also collaborated with Ma Fulu to rehearse a small play "Snowflakes", when the stage artists designed real scenes to match the actors' performances. Qiu Shengrong looked at it and said, "You guys are windy and snowy, what else am I performing?" The set is on the actor, and Qiu Shengrong uses a superb and delicate performance to show the touching scene of retired old workers enthusiastically transmitting calls to the masses in the snow and wind. Qiu Shengrong's three modern plays are very successful, but compared with the Bao Zheng and Yao Period he portrays, he still lacks the style and momentum of qiu Pai's copper hammer.
