This is a special issue of Rondeli Russian Military Digest dedicated to the Russo-Ukrainian war, based on a large number of publicly available resources.

Russian forces failed to make progress towards Kiev from March 2 to 3, 2022, nor did they continue the siege of the city from the west. The Ukrainians counterattacked, capturing the town of Makarif on March 2. On March 3, the Ukrainians attacked the Russians near Ivankov and recaptured Bukha. As of late Afternoon March 3, fierce fighting was taking place in the Bucha-Vorzel-Hostomel area.

The Russians could not approach Kiev from the east, and the Ukrainians fought defensive battles or counterattacks in various areas of the Chernigov Oblast and the easternmost part of the Kiev Oblast.

There have been no major changes in Samui, and the city of Samui remains under Ukrainian control.

On March 2, Russian troops suffered defeat and casualties near Kharkov. As of 18:00 Kiev time on March 3, there appears to be no mobile combat in the Kharkov region. Instead, the Russians constantly bombarded the city with artillery. On March 2, the Russians advanced southeast from Kharkov to the town of Baraklia.

Kharkov and its flanks

In the Severodontsk region, the town of Starobirsk was confirmed to be under Russian control.

As of the afternoon of March 3, Mariupol was either surrounded by Russian troops or close to being surrounded by Russian troops. Fierce fighting took place near Mariupol and in the northern town of Volnovaca. Fierce fighting also took place in the town of Tokmak, west of Mariupol, where the Ukrainians counterattacked the advancing Russians.

On the banks of the Dnieper River, the besieged city of Enejodar was attacked by Russian troops in the late afternoon of March 3.

On March 2, the Russians captured the city of Kherson after the Street Battle. The Russian column moved northwest of Kherson in an attempt to encircle the city of Mykolaiv. They made some progress, but suffered heavy casualties under Ukrainian bombing near Bashtanka, and then encountered resistance from Ukrainian troops in the town of Voznexiansk. During the reporting period, Russia's new attempts to land in the Mykolaiv region were defeated by the Ukrainians.
