Banana Fish, a well-known independent bookstore in China, built a "grocery store" with 44㎡
This small shop deals with limited edition products created by artists or designers and sold mainly. These items vary in size, shape, material, weight, and are constantly updated, a bit like a grocery store.
Due to the special identity of the goods, we start from the posture they should have. All goods (including books) can be included in the category of works of art, but they are not the kind of works that need to be displayed in the art museum, but more like the "sketches" created by the artist in addition to serious creation. They seem to need to be presented in the space in a relaxed but dignified gesture.
Some vague features of the shelf began to appear: it needed to be able to adapt to a variety of strange goods; it needed to provide a "small stage for him" for each item; it could generate new positions at any time when new items appeared temporarily; and it would not appear "empty" when a certain item was sold out.
▲Small items shelf (10cm)
▲Medium-sized shelf (20cm)
▲Large goods shelf (30cm)
Then we incorporate factors into the venue to consider the layout. Located on the first floor of a pure white multi-storey building, next to the atrium, the site is a small space with distinctive features. It does not go deep, but there are natural light introductions in both directions, forming three interesting layers of "light - dark - light", so we decided: adopt a parallel layout, divide the shelves into three rows according to the size of the goods, and classify some very fragile or unable to stand on a large table. Three rows of shelves and large tables further enhance the original layering of the space. Such a layout requires a new feature of the shelf design: transparency.
▲Disc hanging code
▲Large table
We started experimenting with designing shelves with all these features. The first is a structural form that makes the shelf light and transparent: the tension cable is used to bear the load, and the thin wood chips are used as the partition of the shelf. Due to the thinness of the partition, the deformation of the falling will occur after placing the goods, and we decided to keep this deformation as a kind of "fun" and exaggerate it, so we got many display planes like waves. The placement of each exhibit changes the shape of the wave and finds a comfortable position between the crests and troughs.
▲After the wall is equipped with bookshelves
After the space was completed, the owner and his wife mentioned that the goods on the shelves were like small fish swimming in the waves, and like fruits waiting to be picked on the trees, and we were happy to have this "lucky coincidence".
