In the final of the Southeast Asia U23 Football Championship in Cambodia, with a header from the end of the first half, Vietnam won the tournament with a small 1-0 victory over Thailand.
With this victory, Vietnam became the third team to win the title after Thailand (2005) and Indonesia (2019).
In this game, Thailand played more fluently, getting some very threatening scoring opportunities, but did not score. The Vietnamese team did not organize some effective attacks until the end of the first half, one of which was a success.
The only goal came in stoppage time in the first half, when Vietnamese player Tran Bao Toan opened the scoring with a header and Thai goalkeeper Narongsak Nueangwongsa could only look forward to the ball and sigh.
After taking the lead, Vietnam held the advantage of a goal in the second half.
The Southeast Asia U23 Football Championship is a tournament in which the Southeast Asian U23 national team participates, and the first tournament was held in 2005.
The event was interrupted for a period of time from 2011 and resumed in 2019 as a preparatory event for the Southeast Asian Games.
This year's tournament was originally attended by ten teams, but indonesia and Myanmar have since had to withdraw from the tournament due to the coronavirus infection of several players in the team.
In the third tournament, Vietnam played a total of four matches, scoring 9 goals and conceding no goals.
The outcome is not easy, as 23 of the 27 players registered for this tournament are infected with COVID-19, and the team needs to constantly add new players from Vietnam, most of whom lack time to train.
As some players recovered from their illness, the Vietnamese team was able to reach the final with a better posture.
Due to injuries and the impact of the covid-19 pandemic, the Laos team was unable to line up enough players to team up for the three- or four-place finals with East Timor.
But out of the spirit of sportsmanship, the East Timorese team proposed that the two teams share the bronze medal.
The offer has been accepted by SOUTHEAST ASIAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION, and the two teams will be tied for third place.
