David Hearn, born in England in 1934 of Welsh descent, is a self-taught photographer. He began his career in 1955 as an assistant at reflex Agency. As a freelance photographer, he was known for his coverage of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He joined Magnum Pictures in 1965 and became a full member of Magnum in 1967.
In 1973, he founded the prestigious Documentary Photography Institute in Newport, Wales, and resigned in 1989. Since then, he has been speaking and conducting seminars around the world. In 1997, he collaborated with Professor Bill Jay on a highly successful textbook, On Becoming a Photographer.
However, David Herne eventually abandoned the path of reporting photography and instead explored and developed a more personal style of photography, and shot a series of portraits such as the Beatles, Jane Fonda, etc. Hurn's most important work to date is Wales: Land of My Father, which chronicles the great economic, cultural and life changes in Wales in the last 20 years of the 20th century, keenly capturing the subtle and rich details of the transition from the industrial age of the large market to the information age.
It is his book Wales: My Father's Land that truly embodies Hearn's style and creative drive. It's a self-initiated project that seeks to discover the meaning of the word "my culture." It includes observations of the remarkable changes that took place in Wales from 1970 to 2000 when books published by the River Thames and Hudson. As one of the UK's most influential reporting photographers, David Hearne is internationally renowned. His prints are collected by many major collectors and museums.
In 2016, David Hurn was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.
