In 1951, Van Vliet became the commander of the US Eighth Army, and VanVleet was full of ambition and determined to give the volunteers a little color.
On 18 August 1951, Van Vliet ordered the 2nd Division to attack Hill 983 with all its firepower, and he issued the order that "there is no limit to ammunition."
With this policy in place, the U.S. army directly poured ammunition at the positions of our volunteers like crazy, and they directly transferred 126 medium and light artillery and 72 medium and heavy mortars.
The battle was not excessive at all with "shells falling like raindrops", and it had to be the kind of rain that rained heavily, and at its most intense, 6 shells fell almost a second.
In just nine days of fighting, the U.S. army consumed 360,000 rounds of ammunition, 360,000 rounds of shells alone, and an average of 320 rounds per cannon a day.
The American pilots looked down from the air, and there was scorched earth everywhere, and in their words: "There can be no more living creatures." ”
When the situation of this battle reached the United States, it caused an uproar, because this level of ammunition consumption was difficult for even the United States, the richest man in the world, to bear.

VanVleet naturally saw this, but unlike MacArthur and Ridgway, he believed that to change the situation, south Korean military literacy must be improved, and south Korean troops must be trained.
So he made two preparations, on the one hand, to organize a group of South Korean officers to study in the United States military academy, and on the other hand, to set up a military academy in South Korea.
In order to be able to establish military academies in South Korea, he traveled around to raise funds, and even took the lead in donating money himself, and finally rebuilt the "South Korean Army Non-Commissioned Officer School".
Because of VanVleet's contributions to Korea, the Korean Social Association established the "VanVleet Prize" to recognize people or organizations that have promoted U.S.-South Korean relations.

However, my volunteer army acted brightly, heard Van Vliet's request as a father, and immediately said that as long as little Van Vliet was still alive, he would definitely help find it, and would never take hostages.
However, after the volunteers went to the scene to investigate, only the fragments of the aircraft were found, and according to the scene, it is likely that little VanVleet has been blown into pieces.
The US side also inspected the scene through representatives, and finally got the same results as the mainland.
The bright and honest attitude of the Continental Volunteer Army was that the old Van Vliet had to be convinced.
But the hatred between my volunteers and old Van Vliet grew deeper and deeper.
By January 1953, Van Vleet was planning to fight a beautiful battle before Eisenhower's inaugural address, first to present the inauguration of the president and to avenge his dead son.
In order to win a big victory, he deliberately found a position with only one reinforced platoon.
In his opinion, using the strength of a division armed to the teeth of the US army and hitting a platoon of the volunteer army is simply a hand to hand, without any suspense.
So he informed the domestic media, using an almost "live" method, so that war correspondents can send messages to the United States at any time.
