Bruce Gilden was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946. He later studied sociology at Pennsylvania State University, but did not complete the course. Although Gilden briefly wanted to be an actor, he decided to become a photographer after buying his first camera in 1967. He attended night classes at the New York School of Visual Arts, but considered himself essentially self-taught.

Bruce Gilden joined Magnum in 1998 and became a full member of Magnum in 2002, completing a series of exciting and tense mission shoots: the "bizarre" people on Koney Island, whose privacy was abruptly exposed under his camera; the mysterious voodoos of Haiti, the daily lives of new Yorkers. Arguably, people are the most important subject of blues photography.

Bruce Gilden is one of the most iconic street photographers of our time, known as the "typical street photographer", known for his vivid and often confrontational close-ups made using flash, and his images with a certain degree of intimacy and directness, which has become a feature of his work. Although he began his rise on the sidewalks of New York City, where he grew up, he has completed numerous works in Haiti, Japan, Moscow, France, Ireland and India. "I'm known for taking close-up photographs," Gilden said of his practice. "As I get older, I get closer and closer."

Bruce Gilden was extremely fond of black and white expressions, and he believed that black and white were the best expressions of what was seen. Bruce Gilden's photographs are often extremely close to the subject and use flash heavily to highlight his sense of the city. Although his tough photography style has been questioned by many people, it is impossible to deny his faithful implementation of the shooting concept. Every shutter flicker is the process by which he brings the unknown personality of human nature into this real world, and those unnatural states under his lens are the most natural reflections.

In addition to his many critically acclaimed personal projects, Bruce Gilden has worked for Louis Vuitton, ratp Paris Transport System, climate organizations, and publications including Wallpaper and The New York Times Magazine. Bruce Gilden's work has received numerous awards and grants, including the National Arts Fellowship (1980, 1984, and 1992), the New York State Art Foundation Grant (1979, 1992, and 2000), the Japan Foundation Artist Scholarship (1999), and the 2013 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. Since the 1970s, his work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.
