In the semi-finals, Su Bingtian advanced to the final with a time of 9.83 seconds (9.827 seconds) in the semifinals. This result set a new Asian record and made Su Bingtian the first Asian athlete in 89 years to reach the 100-meter final of the Olympic Games. Brommel, who had previously been pinned high hopes, did not make it to the final.
