Have you found that many calcium supplement products on the market now not only contain calcium, but also usually contain vitamin D, and vitamin D products alone are also popular. The benefits of vitamin D3 have been discussed in detail in a previous article, see my article "The Benefits of Vitamin D3 Do You Know?" 》

A brief review of what you know about vitamin D.
Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin. Vitamin D3 plays a key role in absorbing phosphorus and calcium, which support bone health. Vitamin D3 is also important for the immune and cardiovascular system, pancreas, muscles, brain, etc. Since there are very few foods that produce vitamin D naturally, vitamin D supplementation may be required if there is not enough food and there is not enough daylight exposure.
Current studies have found that vitamin D3 has the following benefits for the human body:
1. Protect bone health
2. Enhance immunity
3. Reduce the risk of cancer
4. Increase happiness

Under the auspices of the WHO World Health Organization, experts from 11 international scientific organizations in 17 countries around the world have reached a global consensus on evidence-based medicine in assessing medical evidence on specific problems with nutritional rickets. In 2016, the Global Consensus Recommendation for the Treatment of Vitamin D Deficiency (2016 Global Consensus on The Prevention and Management of Nutritional Rickets) was published in the American Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, recommending that the nutritional status of vitamin D be divided into: adequate, > 50 nmol/L; deficiency, 30-50 nmol/L; deficiency, based on the total serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) level, < 30 nmol/L. Vitamin D toxicity is defined as hypercalcemia and serum 25OHD>250 nmol/L, with hypercalciuria and PTH suppression.
The global consensus recommends vitamin D supplementation as:
Infants 0-12 months: 400 IU/day (10 μg)
Infants, children and adults after 12 months: at least 600 IU/day (15 μg)
This is also the reason why most vitamin D3 supplements on the market are available in doses of 400 IU and 600 IU, although there are also large doses such as 1000 IU and 2000 IU supplements.
Therefore, when purchasing calcium supplement products, we must not only pay attention to the content of calcium, but also pay attention to the dose of vitamin D.
So, today's topic is, what are the benefits of long-term vitamin D supplementation? Take a look at recently published medical studies.
Freshly baked, the Vital D and Marine Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation and incident autoimmune disease, published in BMJ on January 26, 2022: The VITAL randomized controlled trial reveals to us the benefits of long-term vitamin D use.
Studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation for five years, whether supplemented with omega3 fatty acids or not, can reduce the risk of autoimmune diseases by 22%, while supplementation with omega3 fatty acids, whether vitamin D supplementation or not, can reduce the prevalence of autoimmune diseases by 15%.
It can be seen that long-term use of vitamin D can obtain benefits. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and autoimmune thyroid disease.
Current research suggests that taking vitamin D3 during flu season reduces the chances of catching a cold. In Japan, a randomized controlled study was conducted in children receiving vitamin D3 supplementation. The results showed that subjects who supplemented with vitamin D3 were 40% less likely to develop influenza than subjects who took a placebo. And there is plenty of evidence that vitamin D3 helps keep the immune system healthy to prevent infections and the common cold. There are also scientific studies showing that higher concentrations of vitamin D3 in the blood, as well as vitamin D3 supplementation, are associated with a reduced incidence of respiratory infections caused by viruses.
