Wai ya school student story: a science student's counterattack journey

author:March

Approaching the Spring Festival, the prospective graduates of Changzhou Veyer Class of 2022 have reported success frequently.

In late January, 76 Year 12 WAIS students have received a total of 211 offers from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, including many of the world's leading universities.

In anticipation, the students are about to start a new chapter in their colorful lives.

Xie, who holds a number of offers from Imperial College London and the University of Bristol, is one of the people who have reaped the fruits of this application season.

When he first submitted his application, he also "broke through" into the cambridge university interview round. Judging from the results of the application, Xie is not outstanding.

But who would have thought that when he first came to Changzhou Waiya, Xie said that he was "not a good child" at that time. In the days of Changzhou Weiya, the rush passed like water, taking away the confusion of the past and witnessing the more mature and resolute face now. How did Xie's "counterattack" happen?

A division commander who leads by example

Three years ago, Xie first came to Changzhou Waiya and became a member of this big family.

At that time, he was a child with a not particularly good level of English and good math scores. However, due to the overall slightly backward academic situation, he has several major subjects, all of which are temporarily arranged at a relatively basic level of study.

WAIS School

Tiered teaching

For example, in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc., we will refine them into different levels and class types according to the different academic foundations and abilities of students.

This is completely different from the "fast and slow classes", in fact, the teaching goals of each class are the same, the teachers are equally excellent, but the progress and teaching methods are different - there is a difference in learning, the class can do more exploration projects, dig deep into the knowledge points; the foundation is weak, you can slow down and practice, and lay a solid foundation. The "tiered classes" are not fixed and will be adjusted in a timely manner during the semester according to the student's level.

For students who have spare energy, the school will also customize the exclusive curriculum according to their specific interests and the direction they want to engage in in the future.

Due to the inability to adapt to the immersive English learning environment in the school for a while, Xie admitted that at the beginning, "the class is not very well understood."

Changzhou WAIYA has always provided a variety of extracurricular activities, projects, competitions, etc., which have always been very rich and diverse. "Hitting a wall" in the classroom, he simply put most of his energy into things other than learning.

The head of the college to which Xie belonged gradually noticed this smart but playful child.

At that time, the dean of the college came to Xie's side like a friend of the same age, but he did not start with the principle of "study well", but calmly told the story of his youth.

He told Xie that he used to be a teenager who was very similar to Xie, but under the unremitting efforts, he gradually grew into a new look.

For children of this age, sometimes, the power of leading by example is often much deeper than the simple principle, under the words and deeds of the teacher, Xie slowly "grew up", he realized for the first time that he needs to grow, need to take responsibility, and need to work hard to become a better self.

That year, he was in 11th grade.

The "bottoming out" as expected

The growth of boys is often only in a moment, and after establishing good values with the help of the dean, xie's bottoming out rebound also came as scheduled.

But if you want to improve academic performance, determination is not enough.

However, smart and fun-loving, he thought of using his personality advantages and social strengths to create all the opportunities for himself to improve.

English is not good, then practice more! He began to consciously go around chatting with foreign teachers, movies, life, life, feelings... Talk about everything, say everything, and slowly transition from everyday conversations to conversations in the professional field.

In a high-intensity all-English environment, his English level has improved visibly, which means that the biggest "roadblock" to improve his achievements, the English problem, has been properly solved. Along with the improvement of English level, self-confidence is built, and he begins to devote himself to learning with full enthusiasm and enjoy the sense of accomplishment brought about by the progress of learning.

Xie has always been a person who likes to ask questions, and after he begins to pay attention to learning, he may ask more than a dozen questions in class.

Thanks to the personalized, small class teaching of Changzhou Wai ya, Xie students' questions can also get timely feedback.

"Fortunately, there are few people in the class, and even if you keep asking questions, the teacher can take care of it and answer it for you," he said gratefully. Under the patient cultivation of the teachers and the full attention of the teachers, Xie's grades improved by leaps and bounds.

As a science student with good math scores, Xie also has his own set of methods for learning.

Xie is not the type that likes to spend a lot of time brushing up on the questions, but will ensure that he has eaten every question he has done.

"Every time I do a wrong question, I will ask myself why I did it wrong, whether it is a theoretical error or simple carelessness, and how to avoid it next time." Mr. Xie generously shared his learning experience. He also mentioned that learning to do a good job of the wrong set of questions is one of the most important learning methods.

In addition, mind maps are also his helpers, helping him to clarify his thinking and absorb knowledge efficiently.

Every week, he will combine mind maps to systematically review the content of the class, and if he finds that something is stuck, he will go back to read the books again, which will not only deepen the memory, but also sort out the knowledge learned more systematically, so as to eat through each knowledge point.

Knock on the doors of first-class universities

Recalling his own journey along the way, Xie mentioned that he began to work hard from the 11th grade; by the 12th grade, he had changed from the original fun-loving child to the well-known "school bully", ready to challenge the world's first-class universities.

But if you want to successfully enter a good university, academic performance alone is not enough, and when interviewing, admissions officers will not only care about your grades, but also care about what you have done in addition to your grades.

The Changzhou WAISC system supports each prospective graduate to prepare their own after-school research project (EPQ), and this time, Xie and another classmate try to make a simple Hirsh Fusor (a nuclear fusion device).

In the early days, they did a lot of academic research like college students, and after writing a research report of almost 20,000 words, they finally understood the basic principles of the device and began to design their own device.

According to Xie, this device has changed three generations, the first generation is quite simple, just to test whether the sealing method is feasible; the second generation is to design a sketch, but finally failed to make it; and the third generation is currently in progress.

It was this hand-designed project that made imperial college admissions officers shine and finally helped him get an offer; it was precisely because of this project that he passed the first round of screening at Cambridge University and "broke through" all the way to the interview stage.

Before the Cambridge interview, the president of Changzhou Wai Ya School, who has obtained a bachelor's degree in natural sciences and a master's degree in arts from Cambridge University, has also helped Xie prepare three Cambridge mock interviews, and he told Xie that the Cambridge interview is more about your way of thinking, not just the mastery of knowledge points.

In the end, although Xie did not get a Cambridge offer, he also drew a satisfactory end to his application season with many admissions from Imperial College London and the University of Bristol.

In the process of reviewing the entire application season, Xie said that he still had many unsatisfactory places. "I was still not well prepared, and many of my classmates who applied for Niu Jian started in the 10th grade." Xie said with regret, "Be sure to prepare your application in advance." I started preparing at the end of grade 12. You can participate in more competitions, not to get awards, but to exercise your thinking skills! ”

Wai ya school student story: a science student's counterattack journey

This is the counterattack story of Xie, it is not like a superhero movie, with exciting ups and downs, but Changzhou Weiya's education method, more like a spring breeze and drizzle, slowly changing this child in the daily bits and pieces, under the joint efforts of him and his teachers and classmates, he has achieved an extraordinary and more outstanding self!
