On February 14, in the second round of the Beijing Winter Olympics Freestyle Skiing Women's Steeplechase Qualification Tournament, American Marlene Hamill fell and was injured. The medical support team of the stadium immediately responded, and within a few minutes, Marlene Hamill was transported to the chongli branch of the designated hospital, the third hospital of Beijing Medical College.
At 12:07, Marlene Hamill sprained her right knee and fell on the track when she landed. After 1 minute, the medical team at the medical station next to the track entered the field to treat the athletes first aid and fixation. At the same time, the command center of Chongli Campus immediately notified the closed-loop trauma center, informing that athletes who were injured might be transferred to the hospital, requiring preparations for treatment, and the radiology department to prepare MRI equipment.
At 12:10, the athlete was transferred out of the arena; at 12:14, the command center received an ambulance transfer request from the medical station on the site; at 12:45, the athlete arrived at the hospital by ambulance, and the medical team immediately conducted a careful and comprehensive consultation and manual examination of her, and the preliminary diagnosis was "rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee" and excluded head, neck and chest and abdomen injuries. After communicating with the accompanying team doctor, the MRI was quickly completed, confirming the team's previous diagnosis. In the end, the doctors of both sides negotiated and decided to temporarily adopt the method of external fixation of movable braces from the schedule and the actual sports and rehabilitation needs of the athletes, and the athletes returned to the team for conservative treatment.
"There were athletes injured on the track and we were on the scene within 1 minute from the nearest ski doctor." Liu Chang, medical manager of the Genting Venue Group in zhangjiakou area of the Beijing Winter Olympics, said, "After a simple disposal, the athletes can be sent to the athletes' medical station or the end area within 4 minutes." If it is the end area, it will be transferred directly by ambulance, and it will take 19 minutes to reach the designated hospital - the Chongli Branch of the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical College. "The role of the ski doctor is very important throughout the response intervention process. Because they have to make a preliminary judgment on the situation of the injured and report it, and then they can transfer according to the situation.
If the condition of the injured person is not serious, there are staff in the usual departments for the treatment of all trauma at the athletes' medical station at the venue. At the medical station next to the slope obstacle course, medical staff are on duty in groups of 20 from key departments including orthopedics, internal medicine, cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurology and neurosurgery. Since 2018, the medical security team of the entire Genting stadium group has been conducting drills, familiarizing themselves with the process and running into the team. "As long as there is training, as long as the track is open, we are guaranteeing." Liu Chang said, "Some time ago, a trial skater of the chase was injured, and we transferred him to the Chongli Branch of the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University very efficiently by helicopter, which was affirmed by the International Snow Federation and the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee. ”
