There are new ways to identify marine and continental sedimentary environments

The scientific research and innovation achievements achieved by the team of Professor Wang Aihua of the Nanjing Geological Survey Center of the China Geological Survey and the team of Professor Wang Zhanghua of East China Normal University - "Distinguishing Method for The Identification of The Marine and Terrestrial Sedimentary Environment of the Exchangeable Strontium Barium Ratio Selectively Extracted from Terrestrial Clastic Sediments" has recently been authorized by the National Invention Patent.

By analyzing the continuous extraction morphology of synthetic detritus sediments of different salinities, researchers found that the main changes in salinity of water bodies are commutative barium and strontium carbonate in clastic sediments, so as to propose the use of selective extraction of the exchangeable state strontium barium ratio for the identification of marine and terrestrial sedimentary environments. Verified by hundreds of samples, the accuracy of this method is more than 95%.

The patent is of great significance to sedimentary geochemical research, and can be widely used in sedimentary related fields such as Quaternary paleoenvironment, sea level rise and fall changes, oil and gas exploration, and sedimentary mineral exploration, which is conducive to solving some problems in the current ecological and environmental geochemical evaluation methods.
